The administrative center for each quadrant of the [[Chatcaavan Empire]] is known as that quadrant's apex. The Eastern apex system is the most industrialized of all four, and the richest. Because of how much shipbuilding is down in the eastern sector, Apex East hosts the largest naval station in the Empire, in the external asteroid belt.<ref name="oto-01">''[[Only the Open (Fiction) |Only the Open]]'', Chapter 1</ref> The administrative head of the eastern navy is Logistics-East (who will become the [[Usurper]]).

There's a single habitable planet, which is overseen by a worldlord who is functionally naval, even though he's technically a system lord; there's so much Navy stuff going on here that unavoidably there's been naval officers coming out of that world's ruling family.<ref name="oto-01" /> The worldlord is properly known as The Worldlord of Apex East, or Worldlord, Apex East.

There are two bases near the planet, one on its moon, and one in orbit. The orbital platform is overseen by Deputy-East. The moon base is overseen by Manufactory-East. All three of these worthies have fancy estates on the planet in the same high-rent district of the capital.

“This is ancient history, but it feels like it happened to me because in a way it did,” Reese said. “The short of it is that there was a war. The nations on Earth couldn’t even agree on whether to attack us or not, so they separated and started fighting one another at the same time half of them were fighting us. It was a very long, vicious war, and by the time it was done Earth was in shambles and Mars had lost most of its fighters. Most of them men. The women got by and had families by ordering sperm and getting artificially fertilized. “That was ancestors ago for me,” Reese said. “Most Martian families now are normal, but “We were just heading into space, really into space. Those were really special times,” Reese said. “It wasn’t as easy for us as it was for you in the Alliance. You left and... I don’t know. You just had it easier. We had to fight our own instincts to get out into the solar system. It was expensive. There was so much to do on Earth... how could we justify spending the money on pie-in-the-sky projects like space? If we hadn’t started getting scared about asteroid hits, we might have never gone.” An introspective pause, full of apprehension over something that had never happened. “But we did go. And we prospered. Humans need to be pioneers, you understand? They need to get out. I think we must have given that to you Pelted, and I’m glad, since it’s one of our better qualities. “Anyway, we were a colony under a strange charter. Earth had a united world government then, if a sort of rickety one made up of all the nations agreeing to a super-body above them. It wasn’t a very effective world government, but it worked for a while. Mars was established under their charter, so they’re the ones Mars went to when it decided it was done being a colony and was ready to be a real nation. Except they didn’t want to be governed by Earth’s global government because it was, well, Earth’s global government. Mars was a different planet. We had different needs. And since Earth needed so much more than we did... and we had so much to give, we didn’t want to end up indentured servants for life. We thought it was reasonable, anyway.”some insist on keeping tradition. My family’s been an unbroken line of girls born to fatherless women for generations. We stay home, eke out a living doing something appropriately homey, have a nice baby daughter and then that daughter takes care of us when we get old.”<ref>Earthrise, maybe?</ref>

Cradle System

This is the official name of the solar system containing the Eldritch homeworld. (Registered by them with the Alliance by its [[Eldren]] name, "Vuna", cradle.) Naturally, the Universal word stuck for most of the charts.

I don't have a name for the Sector it's in. I should make one up once I figure out how many greek letters I ran through before I gave up and started naming sectors in Hebrew.

==Names/Words that Have More Than One Spelling==
* Meredan and Meridan: the language. I think it's Meridan in AF and Meredan everywhere else, so I am leaning toward the latter. Jury is still out so tell me which you see more often.
* Thondar and Thonder: captain of the Jerisa. I'm going with Thonder because it makes him sound less like a barbarian.
* Imtherili (Amulet Rampant) and Imthereli (everywhere else): I have checked and it's actually more often Imthereli. I like that better anyway so that's the spelling.
* Delairenenard and Delerenenard: It's the latter. It sounds the same either way though.
* Lafayette, Lafeyette, and Lefeyette: KindlesFlame's first name has been through a lot of canonical iterations. I've settled on Lafayette.
* Sovanil and Sovenil: I guess Imma go with the first because Sovenil looks like a conjugated Ai-Naidari verb.
* solidigraph and solidograph: It's solidigraph, what was I thinking with the last one. *facedesk*
* Fasianyl and Fassianyl: This one seems so minor in comparison to the others, but I'm going with Fasianyl because it makes her name look more differenter from Fassiana's.
* Noble's Row and Nobles' Row: Technically the latter is more correct but the former is more common so I'm sticking with the former.
* Leary/Lery/Levi: The interim captain of the Stardancer preceding Alysha. Correct variant is Leary. (He probably gets his mail misdirected all the time.)
* Yuvreth't and Juvreth't from the Glaseahn creation story in Mindtouch, still undecided.

It's a quality education they can apply anywhere.

* He found ten new scholarship grants, and made sure they were from non-Core-Pelted sources so they would be more fairly awarded. Seven of those ten are specifically for command track.
* To fight the belief that the uneven scholarship would deprive Fleet of the necessary number of quality specialists, he had a program developed that would train up non-Fleet specialists to work in Fleet.
* He hired a grant/scholarship specialist for the Terracentrus campus to keep hunting for those things.
* He instated a management position for grant/scholarships for all the Academe campuses.

<blockquote>After the Pelted fled Earth and established their new homeworlds, they thought it would be a good idea to have a military, but while the technology was easily within their reach, the cultural challenges were significant. Most Pelted are non-violent both by inclination and biology, and prior to the Exodus their few interactions with military personnel on Earth had been either as distant authority figures or in security functions. They knew nothing of military history; they weren’t aware of the division of labor or forces; they didn’t understand the military culture and, importantly, its purpose in keeping people under high stress functional and capable of executing their missions.

In short, they were pacifists who could build big guns, decided they should, and then weren’t sure what to do next.

It didn’t help that once they settled into their colonization period, the Pelted failed to find anyone to deploy their fledgling military against. The universe was mostly empty until the Pelted filled it with their own experiments in genetic engineering, and the few aliens the Pelted met were benevolent. The warships the Pelted built found themselves assigned to exploration, disaster relief, and ambassadorial duties. As the merchant fleet expanded, Fleet found extra work in anti-piracy duties… but pirates were few and poorly organized, and these few encounters never necessitated the development of even the most rudimentary of tactics.

Hundreds of years after the Exodus, the most modern and potent military in known space is manned mostly by scientists, engineers, and a small handful of people trained in executive decision-making. It completely lacks the distinction between officer and enlisted personnel, has all of six ranks, and offers little mobility between them save in the command track. Most of Fleet’s members are in the soft and hard sciences and remain ensigns all their careers. They are assigned to the departments of particular ships and never leave. This structure—more like a corporation or government—reflects the duties that have become typical for Fleet, which are primarily scientific, exploratory, and diplomatic.<ref name="aboutfleet">"About Fleet," backmatter to books in the [[Stardancer Series |Stardancer series]]</ref></blockquote>

...and then the Chatcaava, who had previously been a non-issue (and whom the Pelted had insisted to humanity was no threat), became abruptly expansionist. The unexpected change of policy made the Pelted uncomfortably aware of their own vulnerability, and the subsequent increase in piracy made it clear that at least some traditional military training would be necessary in the future. With this in mind, the Pelted began to accept the offer of personnel loans from the human militaries into theirs, and the culture clash began in earnest. As the Chatcaavan Empire has become more aggressive, humanity's demands that the Fleet find the wherewithal to transform into an actual fighting force have become more urgent.

This is the Alliance Fleet into which Alysha Forrest and her contemporaries have been inducted, and the tension between humanity and the Pelted, and the looming threat implied by the Empire’s saber-rattling, have cast a long shadow. No doubt Fleet will make the transition. When Beringwaite and Alysha finally spoke frankly about it, Beringwaite revealed why he was protecting them: Fayid needed the job to support his kid sister and grandmother, but suffered panic attacks in space; Solomon had used the military to escape poverty and prison, but would backslide if thrown out; and though Friedman was a genuine incompetent, he was enmeshed with the others. Alysha tried again to convince him to attend the skullbash, without success.<ref name="wiw-ch07" />

Their conversation was interrupted by a sudden ambush attack on the ship. Recognizing that one of the pirates' goals would be to cripple the ship in order to prevent it from fleeing, they moved to the aquatic navigation section to bait the pirates into the machine room. Forrest then flooded the machine room, opened the airlock between the machine room and the [[UAV Songlance#Aquatic Environment |currentlock]] area and set a timer for the currentlock to open before strapping herself in. The enormous pressure of the currentlock sucked the pirates through, crushing them and shredding them through the filtration system, which Beringwaite and Forrest were protected from by the safety harnesses. One pirate managed to slash at Forrest with a knife, missing her but cutting her safety harness; Beringwaite grabbed her and held her until the currentlock closed, saving her life. After that experience, they were able to have an honest conversation that brought them to an accord.<ref name="wiw-ch07" />

Beringwaite eventually was willing to join the skullbash, despite it being painfully awkward. He also answered a summons from [[Hood]] along with Forrest. The ''Stardancer'''s crew had was mainly the felid races: [[Karaka'A]], [[Asanii]], and [[Harat-Shar]]; though there were some of the other Pelted races (and a handful of humans), there was no water environment, and Alysha found the relative lack of diversity bemusing, and specifically missed the [[Naysha]] and [[Platies]]. Alysha then attended the governor's dinner, in a surprisingly well-appointed and well-staffed mansion than the poor colony's resources would suggest. She briefly thought she had recognized [[Svetlana Karishenikov |a guard]], but chose to move on rather than investigate. She observed that while Kerenkev spoke freely, the representatives didn't--except for [[Brad Courtland]], who kept making sallies that Kerenkev quashed. They discover that prior scouts logged numerous encounters with pirates, and the ''Voidsong'' logged none; in addition, the ''Voidsong'''s report on pirate activity to Fleet Command was encrypted (with an encryption that Alastar could break) and also that there had been a lengthy court-martial regarding the ''Voidsong,'' also encrypted (which Alastar could not break). Alysha decided to hail them and invite them for dinner on the ''Stardancer''--a [[Terran Military |Terran]] custom but not a Fleet one.<ref name="sota-09" />

The ''Voidsong'' did not reply quickly, and did not rendezvous in a timely fashion. Having rid the colony of both its corrupt government and its pirate problem, Alysha asked what was next for Gledig. Dylan responded with a challenge to a duel, with the loser being the one who conceded first. Despite her dislike of swordplay, and taking the first injury, Alysha held her own. Alysha ended the fight by catching the Dylan's blade in her bare hands before it could do a grievous (and match-ending) injury. When Dylan told her that simply twisting the blade would sever her fingers, she replied "Then they do. And today, I'll be the one who pays the price for everyone else. That's why I signed up, alet." Alysha was then responsible for overseeing the funerals of the members of her crew who died during the pirate bombing, and while the volunteer chaplains could provide funeral services for the Asanii and Karaka'An, there was no one to speak for the Harat-Shar angel pantheon, and so it fell to her.<ref name="sota-18" />

Speculating that some quality of the water had given Alastar hallucinations ("or something else?"), she removed her slimsuit and bodysuit and lay in the pool, where she began to perceive the paintings on the ceiling as moving. The cave then reopened and she entered the water, still nude save for her utility belt and oxygen-exchange clip. ==Physical Characteristics==
Eyes like whiskey, a desaturated yellow/light brown. Moderate height, for an Eldritch, about 6'1", with the a more masculine face than the typical Eldritch (because closer to human). Has the blunted chin that typifies some of the Galare men (we see it crop up again generations later, in Jahir). Hair is kept just past shoulder-length, and is kept swept back off the brow, no bangs, and no part.

==Biography==
Seledor is a second generation Eldritch, born of one of the transformed-from-human generation. He and his twin, Elesir, were born in 2142, 41 years after the Eldritch settlement of Escutcheon. He has his father's love of the stars, and one of his frustrations with the developing Eldritch culture was their determination to become isolationist, and to turn their backs on technology. His desire was to have the longevity of the Eldritch in order to have the time to explore, given the length of interstellar distances, and the thought of using endless centuries to sit on a single planet was intolerable. This warred badly with his love for and closeness with his twin, and the tensions between those competing needs have informed his entire life.

It was Elesir himself who told him to go.

* At the time of the meeting between Eldritch and the Alliance, he is 407 years old.
* He is 469 at the time of the Pelted's Rapprochement with Earth.
* He is around 500 years old at the time he was last seen, several decades after the Chatcaavan truce. It was assumed he was lost to slavers or pirates; he is one of the first Eldritch to go missing, the list of which inspired Liolesa to send Hirianthial out as her spy.
