Appearance and Personality
A smooth, flat face, silver fur, ash-gray hair coiffed into a bob framing a pointed chin. Silver, white and gray tail.
Like all Tams, discreet, and very serious about her oath to the Queen and the Veil. ("You can ask me anything, alet.
Biography
Familiar with Fassiana, and the terrain around Delen Galare. Aware of procedure for Eldritch leaving the homeworld, including the orientation.

Can pilot landcraft and spacecraft.

Briana was responsible for ushering Sediryl off-world for the first time (on the QTS Sydnie Founder), at the request of Fassiana Delen Galare. Sediryl's first ride in a modern vehicle (a jay) took place with Briana at the helm (and Briana kindly talked her through some of the features of her ride). When Sediryl thanks her and says she's been very kind, she answers, "And you’ve been very courteous. Not everyone takes their first sight of an alien with such aplomb." Briana was also the one who gave Sediryl advice on how to conduct herself in the Alliance, and how to keep the Veil among people eager to know more about her. It is evident this was a duty she did for more than one Eldritch: "“I can’t say I understand, but I’ve seen a few Eldritch come through by now and while none of them have been pleased at how much they had to learn, I have yet to meet one as… handicapped… as you have been."

She is not the only Tam who runs the route from Starbase Ana to Escutcheon.

Quotes
* “Every time we leave your world, alet, we choose a different route, and those choices are partly random, and partly personal, and partly based on weather conditions and the volume of traffic at the time. This, too, is part of the Veil, and it has been the primary work of the Queen’s Tams since Sydnie’s daughter became the first Navigatrix. We keep you safe. As safe as possible, anyway.”

At some point after leaving Escutcheon, Bethsaida was captured and enslaved by the Chatcaava, earning favor for Third-Who-Was, who arranged it. She was delivered to the Emperor's palace on the Throneworld. There, a pair of fellow alien slaves, a Malarai and a Tam-illee, attempted to shield her from touch; they placed themselves between her and Chatcaava, and slept in the doorway of the closet where Bethsaida slept to guard the entrance. They were ultimately unable to do so, and Bethsaida was presented to the court in a white shift and a silver collar set with opals. Bethsaida developed a strong touch sensitivity, ultimately resulting in a comalike unconsciousness. Nevertheless, the Emperor planned to rape her before the entire court, which would undoubtedly kill her.

Lisinthir Nase Galare and the Slave Queen hatched a plot, with assistance from Fleet, to help the slaves escape. The plan required the Queen to Touch Bethsaida and take her pattern, and then Change to impersonate her for the presentation. Bethsaida was unable to tolerate her touch for long enough for the Touch to be completed, so the Queen took Lisinthir's pattern instead.

The rescue was successful and Bethsaida was returned to her home, traumatized but intact. She later sent a message of thanks to Lisinthir and the Queen.

After the war ended, Bethsaida had recovered enough to go on a tour of Escutcheon's convents. She was accompanied by Jahir's brother Amber, and her writings about her experiences were published in the broadsheet's "Letters to the Editor" section. The tour and the writings were generally believed to be a plot against the new heir, Sediryl Nuera Galare. She was also grooming Amber to provoke a duel with Lisinthir at the investiture (which failed because Lisinthir refused to rise to the bait), possibly by using previously-unknown mind powers.

A Pelted drink, usually served hot, made by creaming sugar and butter together and then mixing with hot cream and flavoring with cinnamon.

Recipe
The recipe for kerinne was provided in Mindtouch, and is as follows:

<blockquote>Like coffee and tea, kerinne has as many variations as it has drinkers. It’s always based on milk and cinnamon, but every other variable can (and has been!) messed with. I’ve seen molasses-sweetened kerinnes, or kerinnes with extra spices; restaurants will often have house variants or even kerinne cocktails! Vasiht’h’s recipe is a very common one, and begins with creaming butter, as if you’re making a cookie.

Vasiht’h’s Kerinne

* 1 tbsp butter
* 1 tsp cinnamon
* 1 tbsp honey
* 1/4 cup cream
* pinch of salt
* milk to taste

Over pot set to medium-low heat, stir butter, cinnamon and honey until combined and warmed through. Add cream and stir until combined. Leave on burner until steaming, then season with salt and add milk to taste. (Steamed or warmed milk integrates more easily.)

Yield: 1-3 servings (depending on how much milk used)</blockquote>

Variations
Kovihs makes his kerinne with black pepper.

Sehvi makes kerinne thick enough to stand a spoon in, and serves it with water.
* "A year wasn’t long enough for the Alliance to have recovered from the shock of the war. It wasn’t long enough for them to have finished reacting, in fact. The refugee situation wasn’t as urgent as it had been in the first months following Tam-ley’s destruction, but it wasn’t settled, either, and if anything the outrage and hurt had been mounting with the passing months."
* Smells like vanilla?

Biography
Vasiht’h (now Vasiht'h Seni Galare), a Glaseah and thus an esper, is the mindbonded partner and beloved of Jahir Seni Galare.

Mindtouch
Born on Ansealah to Marevhe, a professor, and Petaq, a chemist, he is in his second year of Seersana University’s xenopsychology program when he meets Jahir at the beginning of the latter’s first year in the same program. Their meeting occurs in a hospital parking lot where Vasiht’h is playing with six little girls who had slipped their caretakers at All Children’s Hospital. After Jahir joins in, the children extract their promise to visit, and the friendship commences. Upon hearing that Jahir has not yet secured suitable rooms, Vasiht’h, whose roommate Cadia had graduated, suggests Jahir share the two-bedroom apartment with him, to which Jahir agrees.

A mix of Glaseahn pragmatism and personal anxiety, coupled with a sincere devotion to the Goddess Aksivaht’h, Vasiht’h struggles with deciding which track of xenopsychology to focus on, wavering between clinical and research. He often confides in his closest sibling, his younger sister Sevhi. As he and Jahir find their friendship deepening through shared studies, volunteering with the little girls – Nieve, Kayla and Meekie (Tam-illee); Amaranth and Persy (human) and Kuriel (Seersa), evening dinners with their quadmates – Merishiinal (Ciracaana) and Leina (Seersa); Brett (Seersa) and Lucrezia (Harat-Shar), Vasiht’h fears he is unsuitable to be a clinician because he isn’t sure he can maintain emotional distance from his clients. He switches his focus to research and launches a project researching the effect of sleep-soothing on hospital staff. It is when he and Jahir are comforting Lucrezia, their Harat-Shar quadmate having romantic troubles, that they each feel the glimmer of mindtouch between them. But it is when Nieve dies in Jahir’s arms that Vasiht’h first truly enters Jahir’s mind to stabilize him. After, Vasiht’h explains mindtouch (ahv’shev) to Jahir, and that, if nurtured, it can become a “permanent, rare and precious mindline” (et’ahv). As their second year winds down, with Jahir committed to the medical track, the mindline grows more consistent, and at one point offered a hint of the mage power Jahir will one day possess (Mindtouch, p. 374). When Jahir is offered two residencies, one at the university’s hospital, the other at the Alliance capital, Heliocentrus on Selnor, Vasiht’h refuses to tell Jahir that he wants him to stay on Seersana, that he loves him. Though both feel their growing attachment, both fear the consequences. As the second year concludes, Vasiht’h realizes that he is better suited for clinical practice than research and an eventual professorship. He also decides that Jahir needs to learn if he can manage the residency on his own, or if he shouldn’t be doing the medical program in the first place. With Vasiht’h’s encouragement, Jahir accepts the coveted Heliocentrus residency at Mercy. The day he leaves, Vasiht’h realized his error: that Jahir’s pain is not being left alone when those he must outlive die, but was being held apart by those who would protect him. This epiphany leads Vasiht’h to virtually drop everything and follow Jahir to Selnor. (Mindtouch)

Mindline
Vasiht’h arrives on Selnor unannounced; upon his and Jahir’s first sight of one another, their unspoken avowal permanently fuses their mindline. Vasiht’h immediately takes charge of Jahir’s health, which is deteriorating under a combination of Selnor’s heavy gravity and the demanding residency schedule. The situation is complicated by a cluster of emergency patients, the cause of whose deaths no one can determine. Jahir enters one’s mind at the moment of catastrophic failure and is nearly lost; his ability to call through the mindline enables Vasiht’h to race to Mercy Hospital and pull Jahir from the patient’s dying brain. While Jahir does learn that the deaths are drug-related, Vasiht’h is angry with the hospital staff and upset with Jahir for endangering his own life and their life together. He also learns from Sehvi that in the early stages of development, it’s much harder for mindbonded to disengage, so Vasiht’h’s life is also endangered. When Jahir interposes himself again between a drug patient and death, suffering a near-fatal cardiac arrythmia, Vasiht’h is furious but relents when Jahir promises not to attempt to delay the drug patients’ deaths without Vasiht’h’s help. Vasiht’h works with Jahir through the mindline not only to help uncover the name of the illegal drug, but also to keep the patients alive long enough for their families to say goodbye. The experience solidifies Vasiht’h’s role as guardian of Jahir’s health, while Jahir recovers from the ravages wrought by the Mediger’s Syndrome exacerbated by his time on Selnor. Upon their return to Seersana, Jahir having passed his residency early by virtue of his work at Mercy, Vasiht’h takes up the coursework needed for a clinical xenotherapy degree. Jahir decides to set aside the medical track and also had a year’s worth of courses, plus their practicum work to complete a clinical degree. They begin to work on their combined esper-based therapy on unconscious subjects and complete their degrees. (Mindline)

Dreamhearth
When Vasiht'h was traveling to join Jahir on Selnor, he had a layover on Starbase Veta and decided it was the ideal place for them to establish their practice. Unfortunately, they learn that, while Jahir would be granted residency immediately as a rare member of an allied species, Vasiht'h would have to wait to see if their work offered enough of a benefit for him to be allowed to stay as well. They settle in to begin offering their unique approach to xenotherapy and learn that their colleagues are withholding judgment and, in the case of human psychologist Allen Tiber, actively hostile. Yet they found an ally in Helga, an influential Hinichi therapist ready to retire. As their practice launched, Vasiht'h's discomfort with his and Jahir's disparate wealth began to build, especially since Jahir selected a temporary rental cottage for them in the expensive Garden District. At the same time, his sisters introduced him to the works of Rexina Regina, who writes romance novels featuring Eldritch, to "help" him with his relationship with Jahir. Continuing to confide in his younger sister Sevhi, Vasiht'h also struggles during this time with his feelings of inadequacy and surprises himself by deciding to seek therapy with Allen Tiber. They build a solid therapeutic relationship, though Tiber maintains his skepticism about Vasiht'h's and Jahir's methodology. With the support of the therapy, Vasiht'h is able to address his discomfort with Jahir's wealth with his partner and, while still not completely comfortable, able to set aside his unease with the imbalance and focus on the more important issue of being "enough for himself." As the decision point for their residency approval approaches, Helga broaches the issue of their work on Selnor and questions their refusal to use their heroic work to influence the housing authority. Upon hearing their rationale, she intimates that she plans to recommend them as her replacement upon her retirement, aiding their residency application. When Allen Tiber's dog Trust dies, Jahir and Vasiht'h find an abandoned puppy through the Port authorities and gift it to Tiber. When Vasiht'h receives the letter informing him that his residency application has been accepted, he celebrates by buying season tickets to the cultural center's musical season, a present for Jahir purchased with "their" money. Helga retires and gives them her practice, including her property, The Healer's Knot. (Dreamhearth)

Dreamstorm
About five years into their practice, Vasiht’h and Jahir attend the wedding of their former quadmate, Lucrezia, at the chapel complex at Seersana University. During a meal with their former quadmates, Vasiht’h notices how enthused and engrossed Jahir becomes when discussing medical matters with Brett and XXXX. He has been sensing something similar through the mindline for a while, and during a visit to his former mentor, Professor Armin Palland, Vasiht’h voices his concerns. He learns that Jahir has accumulated enough continuing education credits to take the test for a general Healer Assist. Upon their return, Vasiht’h broaches the topic with Jahir, who decides to take the three-day test, and in the location Vasiht’h proposes: the resort planet Tsera Nova. While Jahir tests on the orbital station, Vasiht’h enjoys the resort’s activities, during which he meets Kristyl, an extroverted and charismatic human, and Gladdie, her reserved Asanii companion and best friend. On the third day, he joins Krystal and the group of friends she has accumulated for a day-long cruise to see the cetaceans who perform for tourists. Kristyl, who has noticed that the seas are becoming rougher and the cloud formations unusual for a planet engineered for perfect weather at all times, insists on a “game” requiring everyone to wear their their life vests. On the return trip, a violent hurricane arises, and the boat is destroyed. Vasiht’h is thrown into the sea and struggles to keep swimming until Romeo, a seal in the show, brings two dolphins alongside for him to grab onto. They tow him to a life raft, where he’s hauled aboard, having suffered a broken wing. Eventually they reach the shore and take refuge in a control room on the resort’s Serenity Island. Kristyl and Vasiht’h volunteer to look for other survivors before the full strength of the storm arrives and find a Hinichii toddler. Meanwhile, Jahir, taking a break from the final portion of the test, sees the huge spiral cloud over the resort continent and learns about the disaster. Abandoning his last test, even though it means he will fail the entire thing, Jahir volunteers as a Healer Assist to pad down to the planet. While working, he finds Gladdie; together they work to calm the injured and their families. When the storm passes, Vasiht’h and the other survivors with him pad to the hospital, where he and Jahir are reunited. They return to Starbase Veta, but both are traumatized by their close call. Vasiht’h goes to see Alan Tiber, who helps him see that his discontent is based on his need for others’ validation of his life choices and that what he is doing in his therapy work has value. Jahir tells Vasiht’h that he failed the test because he came to save Vasiht’h. Both agreed that they love their current life and each other, but that does not prohibit Jahir from getting his Healer Assist degree as well. Jahir takes the test a second time, successfully. While he is gone, Kristyl and Gladdie, now a couple, visit Vasiht’h, bringing their adopted child, the Hinichii toddler whose parent died in the storm. (Dreamstorm)

Family
Nearly ten years into their practice, Jahir receives a request from his mother to attend the wedding of his cousin Juzie into a family with whom she hopes to strengthen alliance in support of their progressive Queen. The marriage of the two, still-young children, will seed openness in the allied family. She also includes Vasiht’h in the invitation, unexpected since the Eldritch do not welcome aliens to their planet. Vasiht’h agrees and accompanies Jahir to the Eldritch homeworld. Upon their arrival, Vasiht’h is stunned by the opulence of Jahir’s estate; he knew his friend was wealthy, but he had no idea of the extent of that wealth. When one of a group of Jahir’s peers make it clear that they consider Vasiht’h either a pet or a lover, Vasiht’h realizes he has a tough time ahead of him. Jahir is apologetic for having not prepared Vasiht’h adequately, explaining that he wanted someone “sane” by his side for this event. Jahir’s mother is gracious and welcoming, and he meets Jahir’s cousin, Sediryl. When Sediryl comes into the room, Vasiht’h gets a flash of powerful red through the mindline, before it slams down completely. He realizes that the powerful rush of passion he briefly felt is Jahir’s; he later confronts Jahir about the unpleasant slamming and “knives” and learns that Jahir loves Sediryl, but cannot marry her because she is his close cousin – indeed, Jahir will not discuss the topic further. At the reception leading up to the wedding, Vasiht’h is grossly insulted by the groom’s mother and leaves the manor to cool down. He meets Sediryl, walking with Juzie, a child on a pony. When they return, they are confronted by the wedding guests and the groom’s mother, who declares that not only is it bad that Sediryl, a woman of “questionable morals” is with her, but that Juzie has broken the bridal rules by being with a non-family member before the wedding. Sediryl proposes that there exists a process through which Vasiht’h can become a family member. Vasiht’h agrees to undergo the test, over Jahir’s objections and concerns. He is taken to the manor’s chapel, where he drinks a mixture that may be toxic to his system. He passes out. Upon regaining consciousness, he finds Sediryl has tied him into an uncomfortable rope harness. She forces him out of the chapel into the nearby forest, tying him to a tree. She reveals that her plan is to foment something that will either destroy the Eldritch or force them to change by staging Vasiht’h’s death at the hands of the groom’s family. Vasiht’h tries to reason with her to no avail; she slices his side with a knife bearing the groom’s family sigil and leaves him to be eaten by wild animals. Vasiht’h’s last conscious act is to try to bury the knife so no one will know who abducted him. He awakes in Jahir’s arms in the chapel and learns that everything that occurred was in his mind and part of the test, which he has passed. Jeasa presents him with a medallion bearing the family crest, a unicorn; Queen Liolessa arrives, and he introduces himself as Vasiht’h Seni Galare. The wedding goes on as planned, after which Jahir and Vasiht’h, their connection now formally recognized by Jahir’s family, return to Starbase Veta. (Family)
Lots and lots of extended family, moved to their own page because it has relevance to more than one major character: Vasiht'h's Family

Children
When Vasiht'h first applied to the Temple for his children, he was 29th in line for a surrogate. It's also revealed in the same chapter that he was younger than his parents had been when they made their initial request. The events of the Chatcaavan war cause him to miss his turn. When he and Jahir settle on Escutcheon, he learns it would be about a year and a half before he could expect the Temple to have children for him. Not long after Jahir's investiture as Prince Consort (so maybe a month or so shy of the promised year and a half), the Temple notifies Vasiht'h that his children are ready for pick-up (""Oh, Goddess, that sounds ridiculous. Like they're some kind of take-out meal I ordered."). The two of them, along with Vasiht'h's Aunt Drusti, Cousin Josti and Cousin Viht'hi, travel to Anseahla to get their three kits, the number selected by the Temple. (Heartskein, Ch. 4.) The kits are born before either Jahir's and Sediryl's twins or Lisinthir's and the Queen Ransomed's twins.

On the return trip, and with Jahir's help, Vasiht'h chooses as names words that reflect Eldritch virtues and could also be shortened to sound like Glaseahn names. (Heartskein, Ch. 9) They decide on:

Aevanauv, a son whose name means "Faith." He is called Evan.
Efeanoc, a son whose name means "Strength." He is called Anoc.
Ithauvni, a daughter whose name means "Fearlessness." She is called Thauvi.

Vasiht'h considers Jahir also a parent to the kits; as part of the Galare House, the kits are formally presented to Queen Liolesa (Heartskein, Ch. 13). At the Glaseahn presentation ceremony, together Vasiht'h and Jahir perform the traditional rhythmic pattern dance to welcome the kits and honor the Goddess. (Heartskein, Ch. 14).

"Not to say that love doesn't also create problems, because it does. Or that love solves problems, because it doesn't. But it makes things bearable. And you can do a lot when you feel like things are bearable."
Biography
Over 150 years old, at the beginning of Mindtouch.

Killed a man in a duel before he left Escutcheon for the Alliance: "A maden at the summer court had been seeking relief from her over-managing mother and aunt. We found an alcove to sit in and talk. That was all. But we were seen and aspersions were cast on her, so I called those who maligned her to account. We dueled. He put his tip through my shoulder, but I fought on until I sliced him. So honor was satisfied. My wound, though more serious, healed. His developed infection and he died." Further: "I did not even care for the woman--she was the daughter of one of the Queen's enemies! I was fighting Galare's enemies when I threw down the challenge."

Quotes
"We move from strength to weakness and come around again to strength, and that movement is a sign of life. Were we always strong, were we always weak, did we never trade roles, we would be souls impervious to the world around us. And then how would we change? How would we grow?"

"Because I am the one who will willingly go to your cruel hand and kiss it for gratitude, and you will deny me nothing."

"Do not doubt yourself, Ambassador, for your cousin still loves you."

"We are all worthy of love, no matter what we've done lately to earn it."

"I try not to make promises unless I know I will keep them."

"Sometimes one needs the surgeon's touch, not the therapist's."

"A skilled musician makes many promises with the fingers on the frets of a lute."

"I think you measure your worth in your utility, Nase's Heir... and we know that we are disposable when we are no longer of use. But we don't need to be useful to be worthy."
UAV Cometfencer Restaurant
The UAV Cometfencer has a cook--sort of. The Cometfencer has a person who calls himself a cook who spends most of his time scouring the u-banks and newsstreams for new and interesting recipes to feed to the genie. These include the following:
* Burgers with onion rings and fries
* Axeman ale

Chatcaavan Foods
* Food is largely eaten with the fingers; claws are used to slice and tear. There is knife at a place setting, but there is something reminiscent of a fork.
* Extremely meat-heavy
* Raw food is common--fruit, vegetable, and meat--but some prefer a char on their meat for the flavor. It is still cooked drippingly rare.
* Brandylike before-dinner drinks, blood-dark, tasting of fire. Unpalatable to some Pelted
* A fruitier but still strong after-dinner brandylike drink
* Meat may be slaughtered in advance, but in private dining may be killed at the table by the diners
* Vegetables shaped like red spears
* Flavored ices, including one "that reminded Lisinthir of both mint and lime."

* Tea-wine, a Chatcaavan drink, sometimes served with breakfast

Eldritch Foods
* Gentleman's punch
* Saerrie-flower tea (this is in Wingless, but based on the name it sounds like it's probably Eldritch in origin?)

Specific Meals
Dark Lighthouse
(I think this is probably Terran foods since it's stuff that Avram Hancock learned from his mother, but it's possible that he's from the Moon or Mars or something?)
Lisinthir's eyes are an unusually dark shade of sapphire. He bears grey scars on his chest, back, flanks and arms from the Chatcaavan Emperor's testing, as well as multiple duels and one memorable fight aboard a Chatcaavan starship. His voice is baritone; he plays several instruments and can sing, but not at a professional caliber. He dresses elegantly for every occasion, whether it be traditional Eldritch clothing for court, Chatcaavan robes and trousers or hot outfits for clubbing. His personal scent is reminiscent of ambergris.

Family
* Son of Korval Keldi Imthereli and Malavi Nase Galare.
* Consort of Emperor Kauvauc Ueneuvin and the Queen Ransomed.
* Children: firstborn twins, Kolvin and Niriel. Thirdborn Alari, a girl. Fourth, Sarkhan, named after the Emperor's father.

History/Bio
Lisinthir Nase Galare is the only son of Malavi Nase Galare and Korval Keldi Imthereli. A superb swordsman, he was probably trained by Shoriven Fol Nase, a legendary swordsman in the north. As a child, Lisinthir was raised in a hostile and loveless environment, often used by his parents as a weapon against one another. In later years, he reveals to his cousin and lover, Jahir Seni Galare, that his parents never gave him a milk-name or love-name, the shortened version of a child's formal name used by intimates and bestowed as a mark of love; Jahir gifts him with the name Lin.

As a youth Lisinthir had three minor affairs, having been chased by the women in question. Two wanted money, and their interactions were minor and not consummated fully; one wanted a baby, and her husband had not been capable, and that one wasn't a fertile union but they dallied.

An excellent huntsman, Lisinthir chose upon entering adulthood to reside alone in a hunting lodge his mother bequeathed to him, attended by his butler Pellen. He spent his time afield on his ugly but reliable horse, Dart, hunting for meat and pelts to feed his mother's household and pay the servants, usually thicket boar and ice deer. He spent several years alone at a time. Forced under threat by his father to attend court -- introduced too late in age to be considered an important player -- Lisinthir was charged to secure a wife who would be able to bear a child to re-establish House Imthereli and restore his father's pride of position. Instead, he arrived with a massive chip on his shoulder and spent his time dueling nobles whom he thought had insulted him or his House, never losing and establishing a reputation for ruthless aggression unbounded by House alliances. Queen Liolessa recognized his restive nature and his desperation to be used to his potential; in response to the Alliance's request, sent him as Ambassador to the Chatcaavan Empire.

He is over 300 years old at the beginning of Even the Wingless. ("So he'd left his home of over three hundred years to present himself to the youth and arrogance of the Alliance...")
* Becomes most successful Alliance Ambassador ever, with his understanding of the Chatcaava
** freed two sets of slaves from the Throneworld
Events of Some Things Transcend
Quotes
Even the Wingless
"I do not plead or cajole or hope, Second. I require, demand, and occasionally compromise. You will deal with me accordingly."

"I am not Chatcaavan, lady. Your endings cannot hold me. I belong to a different story."

"Anger whittles at your soul. It becomes you. It moves you to acts you would otherwise abhor."

"One man is nothing beside the welfare of millions."

"You want to know what good it is? I will tell you, then. Because to bear the misery of others takes ten times the strength of bearing your own."

Some Things Transcend
"There is a moment, when you are in motion, and it is the move that will grant you victory over a foe against whom you might have lost. A moment where their life is yours. Where their death is yours. That moment, that power... that is what draws me. I fight to defend the innocent. But I love it for that moment."

“I am never annoying. I skip directly from distracting to infuriating. Saves time.”

"Do you see? This beautiful state you come to by trusting another with your safety... I reach by opening throats and feeling the blood surge over my hands, hotter than fire." -- to Jahir

Amulet Rampant
"A weapon is blameless. It can be a tool of oppression in the hand of a tyrant and a liberating force in the hand of a paladin."

"Doing something as honest as hitting someone we're disappointed in would be gauche, when we could and should destroy them with words instead."

"If we do not resist society when it is stupid, we allow it to march to its destruction. Societies evolve, just as people do. They mature; they see the follies of their childhood years and amend their behavior. When a people's traditions and customs do not serve its survival, they must change."

"I fled the homeworld's safety for the Empire, if you'll recall. I am hardly one to judge you for leaning into the knife."

"All the best things in life are high maintenance, cousin."
Farmer's Crown
"If you think waiting is inaction, you have never seen a hunting cat at work."

"Love must have a context. It is society's work to give it one. Where there is n context, there is violence, because love will force its way in where there is no place to receive it."

"Death always walks along side us, no matter how we might blind ourselves to him. It is only when he is obviously stalking us that we can no longer deny it." Some Things Transcend, Chapter 12</ref>

Quotes and Observations by Others
"You are a dancer, a dueler and the last son of the House of the striking drake. You will acquit yourself magnificently."
The Eldritch imperial palace, in the capital. Pronounced /ohn TEEN/.
Facade
Above Ground Floors
Chancellor's Suites
The heir's old apartments are on the ground floor, and the sitting area outside it is known as the Petite Court: it has a painted ceiling and mirrors between the silver and white pilasters on the walls. The Chancellor now keeps his suites here. His office looks like a receiving room, with only a handful of books on a single desk, and several chairs arranged around it. There were cushioned chairs around a fireplace. No windows, so has a chandelier. Walls are painted, and there are carpets, and the colors are ivory, celadon green, delicate yellow. There's a relief running the length of the wall where it meets the ceiling, of a hunt chasing a single basilisk. It smells of sweet beeswax and ink.

Blue Room
This is the small audience chamber. An interior room on the first floor, windowless and without skylights. Stone walls and floors, no tapestries, and only two benches pushed against the walls. Raised chair for the Empress at the end.

The Office of Muniments
Where legal documents are maintained and filed. Presumably this is one of the places overseen by the little mentioned Senior Registrar of the Home Office.

The Swords Salle and Barracks
The salle is a round room floored in wood with clerestory windows. The changing rooms and armory are next to one another at one end of the salle, and a corridor leading to the palace on the other. The barracks is off that corridor, as well as the mess.

Library
Tall ceilings with lancet windows, clear-paned. Shelves are dark, fragrant wood with leather-bound tomes, some as old as Settlement. Here and there, narrow wooden tables for setting out larger books. A dais (a short step up to it) under a half-cupola, lined in more lancet windows topped with cinquefoils.

Palace Chapel
There is one?

Catacombs
Presumably, the Vaults where the Families keep their jewels and the various other treasures, like swords, are located below ground in the catacombs?

Grounds
There's a big lake. There are cliffs. Beyond the lake there are woods with copses and things.

Physical Appearance
Wine-colored eyes. Long face, hair now... I think it's shoulder-length? Somewhere between chin and shoulder? Tall but I don't know how tall.

Personal Ornaments
The hair dangle was made as a gift from the crew of the TMS Earthrise, and included something from all of them - a bell from Kis'eh't's prayer blanket, a temple token from Bryer, Allacazam sat on it, and Reese included a bead she had worn in her hair from the eucalyptus tree she'd grown up with on Mars. Irine and Sascha put it together, and Irine included a lockpick (it turned out to be a very useful gift). Kis'eh't also synthesized small glass beads for it.

Biography
At the time of Liolesa's investiture he was wearing his 'new uniform' as one of the Swords, but was not yet its captain.

Timeline notes indicate he spent 12 years married to Laiselin before he was widowed. Then he moved to the out holdings, got into his fight with Baniel, and renounced the Seal (all over a period of 20 years). Then he left, spent twenty years at the university and then 30 years on his wanderjahr.

Hirianthial is over 600 years old at the start of <i>Earthrise</i> and is of an age with Liolesa Galare. At the start of <i>Earthrise</i>, Hirianthial has spent 40 years as an Alliance doctor. He was a Doctor on Tam-ley and then spent "several months" drifting and acting as the Queen's spy. He was captured by pirates two weeks before being rescued by Reese and the crew of the TMS Earthrise.

Possibly Hirianthial is not clear on his own history, as he either thinks or says he spent "50-odd years" wandering without a plan.

During the Solstice Vigil, Hirianthial received a steel clip to loop his hair dangle so it wouldn't be as exposed from Irine, a book of illustrated marital aids for Harat-Shar from Sascha (this resulted in a wager that Hiranthial already knew everything in it, the stakes being Sascha learned to ride a horse if Hiranthial won and if Sascha won, he and Irine got to bathe Hirianthial)), a book of Glaseahan mind-mage stories from Kis'eh't, a long scroll with a single piece of calligraphy indicating a safe place from Bryer, a pommel for his solidographic sword with the Laisrathera and Galare arms on either side from Reese, and a pedal harp string as a promissory for the instrument itself from Liolesa.
