[[Jahir Seni Galare | Jahir]] and [[Vasiht'h]] have spent five years together in practice on [[Starbase Veta]], and their life is everything they’d hoped: their practice is fantastic, their social standing great, and their domestic life a blissful routine. Since Jahir himself isn’t talking, Vasiht’h decides someone needs to make some decisions. The Meriaen branch of the Jisiensires was never very fruitful.

Lesandurel, who went to Earth, where he met Sydnie (then) Unfound, went on to purchase a residence on Terra and build a life there amid Sydnie's descendents. These Tam-illee went on to supply the Eldritch Queen with the Tam-illee she would take into her service as the [[Queen's Tams]], and while not every Meriaen Tam is a Queen's Tam, every Queen's Tam is a Meriaen (or was, up until the ending of [[Eldritch#The_Veil |the Veil]]).
===Religion===
The Eldritch Meriaen continue to swear by the Eldritch religion. The Meriaen Tams are 40/30/30 split between the major Tam religion (Iley), or conversion to the Eldritch religion, or to one of the Terran sects of Christianity (because Lesandurel met Sydnie at a Christmas party, and the Tams have made a habit of reprising that party annually). The Tam-illee who swear to Eldritch gods tend to be those interacting more often with the Eldritch (mostly among the [[Queen's Tams]]), and some number of them will call on both religions.

==Assets==
Because of Lesandurel's aggressive management of the money allotted to him, both through Jisiensire and as a gift from Maraesa and later Liolesa for his service off-world, the Meriaen fortune is enormous. ("Nine generations of investment off-world can accrue a great deal of money. I'd be surprised if your cousin is penniless even now."<ref name="lais-27">''[[Laisrathera (Fiction) | Laisrathera]]'', Chapter 27</ref>) Lesandurel alternated between building up existing businesses, land speculation, and buying failing businesses to see if he could turn them around. He has a stock portfolio ("modest" in his opinion), and existing money earning interest in various Terran banks.

* Signing of humanity into the Alliance as a member (not as an allied power; this was a condition of continued interaction) (141 BA)

The successful negotiation was conducted by [[Dar Allen]], the Chair of the Alliance Council at that time.

* Humans were to be accepted as a member species of the Alliance, ''not'' an ally
* Humans were not allowed to serve in Fleet in any capacity (including R&D and contracting to firms that built ships or supplied them).

The second condition was considered onerous, and amended to add that the provision would be revisited in a century. This 'Hundred Years Proof' would supposedly give the Pelted enough data to know whether humans could be trusted in the military. When 241 BA rolled around, though, no one made any changes; it wasn't until 167 years later, in 308 BA, that it was challenged by a teen boy who wanted to join, who'd been born on a Pelted world and never known any other. After that, humans were permitted to join. Transfers didn't become a thing until 388 BA, when it was decided that some human guidance wouldn't go amiss. [[Matthew Brighthaven]] would be the first human commandant to serve in that post, about 62 years later.

The [[Timeline]] puts it in 2611, or 141 BA. However, the first edition introduction of Alysha's Fall quotes the reestablishment of contact with humanity as 2377.<ref>Alysha's Fall, introduction to the first edition</ref> This date (and other date references) were removed in the second edition, leading to questions of canonicity. The author notes that the timeline was shifted later, however, to make events more plausible and give more space for events prior to the Alliance's formation, so the 141 BA date is currently regarded as the canonical one.

The Seersa are a small people, very foxlike in appearance with sturdy digitigrade legs. They shed fur and grow long coats with the seasons of their world, and have long, partially prehensile tails. They have only four fingers and four toes, but they do have retractable claws, both on hands and feet. They may be colored in any way a fox is...and in any way a cat is, with many, often exotic combinations of the two.
===Physiology===
If I talk about these two races in the same breath, it’s because they’re fairly similar—can even interbreed, though couples who do end up together tend to genefix children into one race or the other to maintain the genelines. They share a great deal of their genetic template because of their relatively clean history leading back to the engineer who made the first “models” of the Pelted on Earth, and so have avoided most of the reproductive problems that plague other Pelted. They do have some “errors”, most notably a problem with their sweat and oil glands and body temperature control. Plus, they grow hair with seasonal changes and they shed (much to their irritation), though this has given rise to a healthy industry in fur- and hair-styling salons. Their uniformly digitigrade stance (standing bipedal on their “toes” rather than the entire foot) also gives them some joint issues in old age. But for the most part, they are handsome, healthy, well-adjusted people, who have what they consider to be a proud history, and a secure role in the Alliance.<ref name="GA" />

==History==
The Seersa and the Karaka’A are in some ways the “oldest” of the species of the Alliance, because they closely resemble the original creatures gengineered on Earth in the very beginning for Project Homefront. Those early Terran experiments were short, digitigrade, and had more animal-like faces, and that template carried on into the Pelted who segregated into the races of the Seersa (fox-like) and Karaka’A (catlike). Unlike their taller, more humanoid Pelted kin, these early individuals chose to embrace their original heritage, and some of them claim to trace their DNA back to Holly or Joy, the very first individuals ever made on Earth. <ref name="GA">''[[Pelted Guidebook|Guide to Alliance Species]]''</ref>

==Society==
The Seersa and the Karaka’A have many similarities in cultural personality, because the individuals who would become these races were responsible for the Exodus and the political and cultural decisions that resulted in the Alliance. Thanks to this early history, the Karaka’A and Seersa are the de facto leaders in galactic politics. They’re light-handed, but these two had the management of the early Alliance and they still think of themselves (and mostly remain) the stewards of the body politic. This was no doubt abetted by their being the first to settle new planets: they’ve had longer to turn their views outward. That the two planets they chose were in a rare double-world system only made their ability to work together that much easier. It’s a good thing that for the most part their biology promotes phlegmatic, agreeable, and hard-working personalities, because otherwise they’d probably be insufferable.

In terms of splitting the responsibilities of governance, the Karaka’A preferred to deal with the internal politics of the Alliance, with the Seersa being more active in foreign policy, language and diplomacy, and the military. You find a lot of the Karaka’A and Seersa in those fields still, hundreds of years after the Alliance’s founding: the Seersa produces almost all the premier linguists of the Alliance and have many individuals in the upper echelons of the military, and the Karaka’A field more career politicians that most of the other races—combined!<ref name="GA" />

Her complaint was that Lisinthir was "cutting his way through his peers", that is, dueling without regard to political allegiances.

The Aera are tall: over 5’8” is usual before the ears, and the ears are enormous, tufted and shaped like a hare’s. Most Aera have muzzles or demimuzzles, short brush tails like a fox or wolf, and some number of them have winged ankles. The rationale behind the winged ankles was never fully discovered; the Pelted assumed it to either be decorative or a genetic experiment (“Who can graft on the most useless modification” is a common remark). As the Aera have reproduced naturally, fewer of them have the winged ankles (leading to “who can graft the most useless modification that also fails as a heritable trait” comments—the Pelted can be caustic about early Terran experiments). This has generated an endless range of fashion trends in shoes depending on who’s mimicking whom at the time. They stand plantigrade and have the five fingers/toes and nails of the humanoid stance. Coat patterns tend toward the canid, with a light ventral and dark dorsal, and many Aera have “points”. The colors are often more vivid than a Terran animal’s, and no one’s sure where those colorations stemmed from. The Aera are nomads. Even on the planet they settled, they like to move from place to place, and like the Ciracaana (who modeled themselves loosely on the Aera), they have a faction that’s embraced a quasi-aboriginal lifestyle. Most of the population of the Aera homeworld is engaged in this lifestyle, which they take far less seriously than the Ciracaana do. It’s a bit of a game to them, but one they often take to deadly extremes: they can be prickly people, and proud, and quick-tempered. Aera who prefer a more modern lifestyle ply the interstellar waters of the Alliance as merchants, explorers, miners, and anything else that requires being on the go. There are some few Aera in the military, but most of them dislike authority, and even the loose discipline of the Alliance’s Fleet is often too much restriction for them. They are a vibrant and vigorous people, with broad experiences conveyed by their frequent travels, but it’s hard to get them pulling in tandem; even more than the felid Pelted, they prefer to work alone or in small family groups, and treat outsiders with some skepticism.<ref name="pg" />

The religion developed on Aren--no one's quite sure if the Aera on planet take it seriously or not. Worship is not a significant part of their life, from observation. But they have developed a pantheon of gods, over which presides the Greater Master. (Few Aera swear by the Greater Master, but when mentioned it's considered serious business.) Other major gods and goddesses include The Wanderer (Zleayron), the Warrior Mother (Laera), the Warrior Wife (Taleyira), and the Warrior Maid (Seleya), who are partnered by the Peace Father (Luer), the Warrior Husband (Tasenear), and the Warrior 'Bachelor' (Yesier). There is also the Child Granter (Aura), and the Stiller (Zenoa), who stills the breath of all living things. Aera who espouse these gods don't seem to believe in no afterworld, nor in reincarnation.

More common to the travelers amid the Aera (and therefore, more widespread) is a belief in the goodness of the Wind, and a disgust of the stillness and lack of moving air (or anything at all).

The Aera are tall: over 5’8” is usual before the ears, and the ears are enormous, tufted and shaped like a hare’s. Most Aera have muzzles or demimuzzles, short brush tails like a fox or wolf, and some number of them have winged ankles. The rationale behind the winged ankles was never fully discovered; the Pelted assumed it to either be decorative or a genetic experiment (“Who can graft on the most useless modification” is a common remark). As the Aera have reproduced naturally, fewer of them have the winged ankles (leading to “who can graft the most useless modification that also fails as a heritable trait” comments—the Pelted can be caustic about early Terran experiments). This has generated an endless range of fashion trends in shoes depending on who’s mimicking whom at the time. They stand plantigrade and have the five fingers/toes and nails of the humanoid stance. Coat patterns tend toward the canid, with a light ventral and dark dorsal, and many Aera have “points”. The colors are often more vivid than a Terran animal’s, and no one’s sure where those colorations stemmed from. The Aera are nomads. Even on the planet they settled, they like to move from place to place, and like the Ciracaana (who modeled themselves loosely on the Aera), they have a faction that’s embraced a quasi-aboriginal lifestyle. Most of the population of the Aera homeworld is engaged in this lifestyle, which they take far less seriously than the Ciracaana do. It’s a bit of a game to them, but one they often take to deadly extremes: they can be prickly people, and proud, and quick-tempered. Aera who prefer a more modern lifestyle ply the interstellar waters of the Alliance as merchants, explorers, miners, and anything else that requires being on the go. There are some few Aera in the military, but most of them dislike authority, and even the loose discipline of the Alliance’s Fleet is often too much restriction for them. They are a vibrant and vigorous people, with broad experiences conveyed by their frequent travels, but it’s hard to get them pulling in tandem; even more than the felid Pelted, they prefer to work alone or in small family groups, and treat outsiders with some skepticism.<ref name="pg" />

The religion developed on Aren--no one's quite sure if the Aera on planet take it seriously or not. Worship is not a significant part of their life, from observation. But they have developed a pantheon of gods, over which presides the Greater Master. (Few Aera swear by the Greater Master, but when mentioned it's considered serious business.) Other major gods and goddesses include The Wanderer (Zleayron), the Warrior Mother (Laera), the Warrior Wife (Taleyira), and the Warrior Maid (Seleya), who are partnered by the Peace Father (Luer), the Warrior Husband (Tasenear), and the Warrior 'Bachelor' (Yesier). There is also the Child Granter (Aura), and the Stiller (Zenoa), who stills the breath of all living things. Aera who espouse these gods don't seem to believe in no afterworld, nor in reincarnation.

More common to the travelers amid the Aera (and therefore, more widespread) is a belief in the goodness of the Wind, and a disgust of the stillness and lack of moving air (or anything at all).

The lunch was interrupted by [[Gavin Medearin]]'s terrorists attacking the restaurant, during which he attempted to hold Taylitha hostage and had to be talked down by Dylan. That night, the Secessionists attacked the Pro-Accord base. Taylitha insisted that Laelkii stay with her rather than going to help at the clinic, because she felt responsible for having split with Svetlana earlier, which resulted in her capture. Laelki and Taylitha discovered the Secessionists mining the tracks, and that he had a large number of people near the entrance. Svetlana got in touch with them and they arranged to regroup at the track close to Daleth. They also saw a ship--the pirate shuttle--heading toward Gledig. When they met up with Svetlana, they saw, from a distance, the base collapsing. Its munitions had been deliberately detonated by the pro-Accord faction to kill the Secessionists trapped inside and prevent them from claiming it. ====On Cat's Eye Station 40====

The ''[[UAV Stardancer]]'' was sent on a mission to resupply the forty-odd stations around the Cat's Eye Nebula, including [[Stations#Cat's Eye Station 40 |CENS-40]], a job that Taylitha found straightforward but dull. Meeting the station's admin and commander, [[Avram Hancock]], enlivened it as she soon discovered that he was a swordsman and had won the [[Le Ceau Tournament |Le Ceau holoblade tournament]]. Their mutual interest in swordplay (and well-matched skill levels) led Avram to invite Taylitha to spar with him at the station's gym, an invitation that she accepted.

The two sparred, matching one another in skill for an hour (Taylitha felt that he was more of a challenge than her Le Ceau bout), until Taylitha stumbled and Avram caught her. He then asked her to dinner, and she accepted.

Taylitha realized that she had conflicted feelings about her dinner date with Avram. She was attracted to him, but found the idea of being romantically attached to a human upsetting. [[Laelkii Takara Lifeweave]] listened to her concerns; she reassured Taylitha that she wasn't a racist, but questioned why she was so upset by the idea. Taylitha revealed that her hesitation with humans was because "they ''made'' us." Nevertheless, with Laelkii's reassurance to rest and calm herself and then attend, she went to dinner.

The meal with Avram led to engaging conversation, and their discussion led to comparisons of [[Martial Arts#Fencing |fencing styles]], including various [[Harat-Shar |Harat-Shariin]] styles. As a result of this discussion, to attempt to prove a point (at least, ostensibly to prove a point), the two dueled in the [[Martial Arts#Jezherel's School for Light Weapons |Jezherel style]], a highly sensual style, resulting in a kiss. However, after the kiss Taylitha broke away and told Avram that she wasn't comfortable being intimate with a human in that way. He was disappointed, but assured her that he had had a wonderful evening and bid her a good night.

When Taylitha returned to the ''Stardancer,'' distraught, Laelkii comforted her.<ref name="dl" />

Glaseah were created by the first and second generation Pelted, rather than by humanity. This was a highly controversial decision, but some Pelted saw the good intents of Project Homefront and wanted to improve upon it.

Glaseah are centauroid, leonine, short, and stocky, with most not being taller than 5'4". They are always skunk-patterned (either striped or spotted) and are brown, black, or gray pelted; golden Glaseah have been seen but are very rare. They have paws with retractable claws, four fingers, feathered ears (with fairly poor hearing), and wings similar to bats which cannot support their weight for flight. But the Glaseah preferred themselves as their Goddess dreamt them first, and convinced their designers politely to stop messing with the Goddess's plans. The colored coat she left behind, but when she set them back on the earth she did so too quickly; the night sky blackened them as they fell, and the stars they used to brake their fall burned their backs and breasts white<ref name="mt-09" />.
