The Hinichi who served as the Kesh's assistant on Kerayle in the novel Rose Point.

Appearance and Personality

His coat was an awkward patchwork of ginger and red and gray; his eyes a brown unremarkable in color, but comfortable, and comforting. In build, lanky, and probably stronger than he looked, but he didn’t move with the grace of an Eldritch or the power and confidence of the typical Hinichi male.

He was… just a man. An average-looking man, unthreatening.[1]

Biography

Born on the planet of Covenant, which is the oldest Hinichi colony; he has family on Hinichitii, however, and grew up traveling between the planets.

We first see him during Rose Point, on Kerayle, where he says he ended up because he wanted some time away from Alliance culture, so he could just be himself, rather than part of some group -- "the token Christian, the token Pelted, the token loyal, honorable and stoic wolfine." (He admits, though, that he's still all of those things.) [2] He was injured when the Rekesh's raiding party stole Hirianthial and the stallion Kumiss.

He later accepted Reese's offer of employment: "I'll miss Kerayle, but... they've got too many things to work out there, and I'm tired of sitting on the sidelines while they do it." He said, also, "Maybe in a year or two they'll have figured things out, and I can go back."[1]

  • Mechanic

Quotes

  • "Do they have to be bought to be worth something?" (In response to a question about who would buy horses)[2]
  • "And now you’re about to ask what I’m doing here. And the answer is . . . maybe some of us are tired of the Alliance culture too. Starting somewhere fresh, somewhere a little less . . . connected . . . to everything else . . . it’s nice to deal with local issues. Not to have to worry about intergalactic politics when making decisions that you’d think would only affect yourself. It’s nice to just be yourself, and not some group."[2]
  • "I might have wandered far from home. And I might have had my own doubts, and my own dark nights of the soul. But it's amazing how a cry for help clarifies things." [1]

Trivia

  • Likes horses, and can take care of them/ride them.[2] When he takes Hirianthial for a ride on the Kesh's horses, he observes that Hirianthial doesn't ride like an amateur, and guesses that the Eldritch is 'older than my great-grandparents' and has probably been riding longer than Saul's been alive.
  • Wears a cross [1]
