Geography

Sovanil is a long, rectangular province bordered on the west by the river and over it, Ulurith; on the north by Deriline, the neutral province; on the south by Thavelfin, also a neutral province; and on the west by the mountains. Its western border is abruptly mountainous, and the flanks extend over halfway to the river, leaving the largest parcels on the banks: Fesa in the north and Telde in the south. These two parcels share most of the 3397 people residing in Sovanil, with 1638 in Fesa and 1420 in Telde.

The more mountainous regions have not prospered. In the north, Juran and Brel are purportedly held by their respective noble families, but in truth the tenants have petered out or moved east, and the remains of Juran and Brel's nobles live now on Fesa and Telde's charity. In the southwest, Kiriel, Shin, and Thani hold tenuously to their positions, but with 99, 77, and 162 people their parcels are marginal at best. All the wealth and power is concentrated in the eastern parcels, and the only reason the western ones haven't been absorbed by Fesa and Telde is because it suits them, politically, to sound more prosperous and numerous than they are.

History

That left only Sovanil, about whom Liolesa had said, “Derendani Fesa Sovanil is an isolationist only because she fears change, and one can hardly blame her when the changes visited on her proved so often evil. She lost three children begetting her heir, and her husband deserted her—madness, they say, from the constant losses, or because he tired of her, no one can say for certain. Only that he quit her, and then was quit of life, dying of a fever contracted during a hunt. Her dearest sister joined a convent, and while that need not entail abandonment of one’s family, Raunania did, in fact, never talk to her sister again. Has not, as far as I’ve known.”

“But has she done anything? Beyond be a victim of circumstance?”

Liolesa had smiled. “She hasn’t given up.” At Sediryl’s expression, she’d laughed. “All right. A personal story: she keeps cats.”

“Cats! There are cats here?”

“There wouldn’t be, if Derendani hadn’t rescued as many as she could find. She rescues birds, as well. And if she could have kept the dogs alive, she would have. Everyone values a horse, for horses were necessary. Only Derendani made a crusade out of protecting smaller creatures, because the creed says we serve life, even the life that does not live for our benefit.” [1]
