Telegems
Telegems allow communication over significant distances without an external device.
History
Technology
There are various methods of activation, including setting specific whistle sequences to connect to specific people, or vocal changes, whistles, or hums.[1] They can also be activated by flicking one's ears in a particular pattern[2][3], or by touch.[4]
Telegems may be useful in situations where general communication systems are compromised or blocked, as they can be "kept local."[5] When kept local, they have a limited range and will require a recharge after twelve hours use.[4]
Certain materials can block telegems.[4] Telegems can also be manually deactivated.[6]
Telegems are waterproof.[7]
Societal
Civilian Use
Civilian telegems come in various styles, from Fleet-like implants to various iterations of earrings or studs. Decorative earrings are usually sold with a re-usable base, so that the decorative part can be switched out.
Fleet Use
Fleet implants telegems in its officers, usually on the inside of the pinna/outer ear. [8]
Activation and control methods:
- Alastar Virgil flicks her ear in a particular pattern.[2]
- Alysha Forrest uses vocal changes."[1]
- Darya Darteriov clicks her tongue in the back of her mouth.[9]
- Mariledge touches her telegem.[4]
- Taylitha Basil uses a three-note arpeggio.[10]
