Hirianthial Sarel Jisiensire

From PeltedWiki

Liolesa's cousin, and Reese's husband.

Physical Appearance

Wine-dark red eyes. Long face, straight nose. [1] His hair is now shoulder-length. [2] Tall but I don't know how tall. Speaks in a mild baritone register. [3]

Personal Ornaments

The hair dangle was made as a gift from the crew of the TMS Earthrise, and included something from all of them - a bell from Kis'eh't's prayer blanket, a temple token from Bryer, Allacazam sat on it, and Reese included a bead she had worn in her hair from the eucalyptus tree she'd grown up with on Mars. Irine and Sascha put it together, and Irine included a lockpick (it turned out to be a very useful gift). Kis'eh't also synthesized small glass beads for it.

Biography

Pre-Earthrise

At the time of Liolesa's investiture he was wearing his 'new uniform' as one of the Swords, but was not yet its captain. [5]

His first wife was Laiselin Moret Jisiensire. She died in childbed. Felith says Laiselin's death was sixty or seventy years ago, and that they had "not even forty years together". [6]

Timeline notes indicate he spent 12 years married to Laiselin before he was widowed. Then he moved to the out holdings, got into his fight with Baniel, and renounced the Seal (all over a period of 20 years). Then he left, spent twenty years at the university and then 30 years on his wanderjahr.

Hirianthial's parents made unlawful experiments with mind poisons, abetted by Baniel, and died of them. Hirianthial went on an angry and grief-stricken rampage, killing everyone involved except his brother. (It is never made clear how many people or who they were, except that it was more than one person.) He came to regret the mercy he showed his brother. [6]

TMS Earthrise

Hirianthial is over 600 years old at the start of Earthrise and is of an age with Liolesa Galare. [1] At the start of Earthrise, Hirianthial has spent 40 years as an Alliance doctor. [1] He was a physician on Tam-ley and then spent "several months" drifting and acting as the Queen's spy. [1] He was captured by pirates two weeks before being rescued by Reese and the crew of the TMS Earthrise. [1]

Possibly Hirianthial is not clear on his own history, as he either thinks or says he spent "50-odd years" wandering without a plan. [7] He also says that it has been six decades since he regularly carried a sword. [6]

His adventures with the crew of the TMS Earthrise take about a year, and are summarized on Kerayle by Reese: "We did not spring Hirianthial from jail, flee all over the Alliance with pirates on our tail, save him from that crystal mind-sickness and then risk him arresting a drug lord just so he could die on a backwater colony world because the natives are having a fight about who gets to play with the horses and who has to work like normal people." [8] It is on Kerayle that he discovers his mind-mage powers, and his need for counsel and teaching is what brings him home, accompanied by the crew, just in time for Surela's (well, mostly actually Baniel's) insurrection/coup.

Lord of War

It is on Starbase Omega that Liolesa first introduces Hirianthial as her Lord of War. [9] The title is a surprise to him, but he does not object.

Having lost the Jisiensire swords to his brother's treachery somewhere in the snow outside Ontine, Hirianthial acquires an Alliance-made solidigraphic sword, first from Hold 17's armory, then from one of the weapons stores on the UAV Moonsinger. It is this sword that he bears in his world's defense henceforth, starting with retaking the Moonsinger from the pirates. Well, the sword, and his mind-mage ability: at crunch time, he figures out how to render the 87 remaining pirates unconscious without hitting his allies. [10]

His first official duty as Lord of War is the execution of Athanesin. He then stands guard by Liolesa as she personally accepts the individual fealty of every member of Athanesin's army.

During the Solstice Vigil, Hirianthial received a steel clip to loop his hair dangle so it wouldn't be as exposed from Irine, a book of illustrated marital aids for Harat-Shar from Sascha (this resulted in a wager that Hiranthial already knew everything in it, the stakes being Sascha learned to ride a horse if Hiranthial won and if Sascha won, he and Irine got to bathe Hirianthial)), a book of Glaseahan mind-mage stories from Kis'eh't, a long scroll with a single piece of calligraphy indicating a safe place from Bryer, a pommel for his solidographic sword with the Laisrathera and Galare arms on either side from Reese, and a pedal harp string as a promissory for the instrument itself from Liolesa. [2]

Before the coup, Liolesa had asked Hirianthial to play for her when they "come out the other side of this".[6] At Hirianthial's and Reese's wedding, Liolesa mentions something about him owing her a harp song. [11] This implies that the pedal harp she promised him at the Solstice Vigil had been delivered by the time of the wedding; presumably, Hirianthial delivered on his promise at some point during the wedding (though probably not before the end of Day Three).

Once the hospital is built, Hirianthial splits his time between his multiple roles as head of the hospital, security chief for Laisrathera, and Lord of War.

Quotes

  • "You will need someone to watch over you as you fall into and out of all your scrapes, Lia. Who better than me, who has had the practice of it all our lives?" [5]
  • Sascha: "Running doesn't solve anything." Hirianthial: "That depends on which direction you run." [8]

Trivia

  • Reese describes his cologne as "something rich with a touch of spice, a woodsy scent that reminded her of trees." [7]
  • His milk-name is Hiran. When they're in private, Liolesa almost exclusively calls him by it. [12]
  • Prior to their wedding, he calls Reese 'captain,' 'my lady,' and 'Theresa'. After the wedding, calls Reese 'Theresa' (normal), 'my courage' (song name), 'Reese' (only behind closed doors).
