Lili, Sediryl's cousin. The Heir to the Northern Galares.
Physical Characteristics
Biography
Pretends to be a featherhead, but an in actuality a very canny observer and analyst of local politics. She was always smart and hiding it (with her mother's subtle help), but she lacked ambition, and wasn't very interested in the outworld. Her entire goal in the beginning was to play a game: 'can I make everyone at court like me, and dismiss me as non-threatening.' The coup at Ontine, however, changed her dramatically; made her far more interested in politics, and in doing something with her intellect. (This is foreshadowed in Girl on Fire when Fassiana observes of her, "One has two choices: play dumb, or be ruthless. And my daughter doesn't have a ruthless bone in her body, alas. Not yet, anyway.")[1]
She's looking forward to turning her eye toward a broader stage because Eldritch internal politics has become too predictable to her. [2]
Quotes
- "Why would I want an intelligent man, when an intelligent man would be depressed and restive as my husband? You know as well as I do how little men are allowed to turn their hands to when they marry someone of our rank." [1]
- "I can't blame you for believing the mask when I wore it intending to fool you. I didn't want to, you understand, but... you would have cleaved to me had you seen through it, and then no one would have believed it. You never suffered fools, Sediryl." [3]
- "I find ordinary triumphs and tragedies more poignant now that I understand that losing a mother, or a home, is horror enough without dressing it up in angst and ribbons. So perhaps, at last, we understand each other a little better tahn we might have, those years ago when first we walked Ontine together."[3]
- "No one comes of age in this court without learning to act as if one is observed at all times. And our servants are ubiquitous, and see to our every need. I have been surrounded by listening ears and watching eyes all my life."[3]
- "She owes me some largesse after thinking me a featherhead for so long. Or at least, she believes she does and I am willing to trade on that to protect us." [4]
- "It was real when so much of what we do is not. And it stripped away all pretense and forced us to look at the truth… which is that most of us could not make good on anything we claim. Women professing to power, who cannot feed their tenants or make a baby stay in their wombs. Men boasting of strength, who cannot kill and shy from bloodshed. Lord Nase Galare never played our game. He didn’t respect our rules… or… no. He did, but they were the rules we have long since stopped believing in. He forced us to confront our hypocrisy. It did not go over well." [5]
- "I never overindu--cousin, really! You want me to... to what, exactly? Fly around with you across the country, handing chickens to the impoverished?"
- "Yes?"
- Lili paused. "I have never picked up a chicken."
- "Have you even seen one?"
- A long pause. "I have seen a duck?"
- "Close enough," Sediryl said. [5]
- "I will weed with you, cousin, and even find it satisfying. But not in trousers." [6]
