Dominoes and roquelaures are a set of technological tools that allow the wearer to appear differently (sometimes very differently) than their normal self. Dominos are used to alter superficial physical traits. Roquelaures, which are solely for government and Fleet use, have no such restrictions.

Domino

Dominoes are primarily used for fashion or masquerade purposes. They can alter eye or hair color, skin color or fur pattern, but not alter species, height, or general facial appearance.[1] Cheap models have few interface options; high end versions have the option to be activated via subvocalization. It is illegal for civilian dominoes to be programmed to look like a specific person. [2]

Dominoes were too expensive for the Pro-Accord faction on Gledig to purchase, which Svetlana Karishenikov found outrageous as dominoes were an inexpensive frivolity in the Alliance.[3]

Roquelaure

A roquelaure is a Fleet version of the domino technology. It is not limited as the domino is in several ways.

It's a very small chip, so it's usually embedded in a flat card for easy handling until implanted. Usually programmed prior to implantation, using any number of input devices, from earpieces to full computer decks.

The earpiece programming involves sliding the chip into the earpiece and then wearing the earpiece while talking the device through commands.

Fleet roquelaures are very expensive, very dangerous, and restricted tech. They're only issued to one person at a time, and the assignment is tracked so the device can be returned. The chip is locked to that person's biosigns: "an algorithm to check key biological factors, starting with the most rare." [1]

Implantation puts the chip inside a vein.

Shape library includes the wearer's in various states, so someone can pretend to be more or less wounded than they are.

Is powered by the wearer's own biological energy; Fleet roquelaures will starve their wearers to death before allowing the projections to fail unless forced not to.
