Leary was a Fleet captain nearing retirement when Captain Heartfoot of the UAV Stardancer went on indefinite maternity leave. As he was on the shortlist for retirement, Fleet sought a short-term assignment for him, and settled on the Stardancer even though it was a feminic ship and therefore not usually an option for a male commanding officer.
