Original Model 1990, Destroyer

oooOOOOOOooooo

History

The Ghost class and the Voyager class courier were Fleet's first two ship designs: a messenger ship and a fighter. However, the more concerned constituents of the newly formed Alliance were worried that the 200-person destroyer wouldn't be large enough to handle anything that might chase them down, which resulted in the Paradox class battlecruiser supplanting the Ghost class as the primary warship of the new Fleet. Only forty of the original Ghost designs were built before the design was tabled, and of those forty most of them would never have left the shipyard had it not taken so long to finalize the Paradox plans.

Nearly two hundred years later, when the thread of human vengeance was no longer a significant factor in anyone's thinking, the Aggrandizement made exploration and surveying more common missions for Fleet. The existing ship type used for exploring was a hastily expanded version of the Sojourner class scout, the Vigilant class Long-range scout, which struck everyone as a cumbersome compromise. The FBED shook out the old plans for the Ghost class, overhauled it completely, and sold it as a new, better solution to that need, and the Ghost--technically, the Ghost2--started coming out of the shipyards.

While other ship classes have had incremental updates to their designs, the Ghost class is the only ship, other than the Paradox, that's had such a complete overhaul to its original design. This makes the Ghost class one of the newest designs in Fleet. Despite its intended purpose (exploration), it's also one of the rarest ship classes in the Fleet, because of its youth.

(Note that rarity in this instance is a relative term, given that Fleet still fields something on the order of 700,000 ships in Alysha's time.)

Crew Complement

For Ghosts on specific missions (like science survey vessels), ratios may weight themselves further in favor of science personnel.
