Their sensors pick up a very large merchant vessel, they are only a scout or destroyer.

They close, ID is noted as hostile.
The merchant vessel says it holds slaves, so they consider holding fire.
They call another ship, a bigger and more capable one, The Mantlethorn.
Isidore notices a detail, and says that they are holding bosrding parties, and it is The Mantlethorn that they are after. They aggressively close and exchange fire with the other ship and, with much damage, are winning when the other ship blows itself up.
Home, and debrief, and official regrets but they did their best.

The short story Stormfront was originally published by (semipro? pro?) e-zine that I've forgotten the name of but probably have in my records somewhere.
Interestingly, though the author did both covers, she failed to remember that Isidore is blond.
