A chest with a hidden compartment, accessible via a secret latch that can only be opened if one is willing to prick their fingers on "the fangs of the jackal. [1] The chest is sturdy enough that it would take work to break open, and it would be impossible to conceal that it had been compromised.[2]
History
"No one makes jackal chests anymore, for the very good reason that everyone knows how they are operated."[2] The story of the jackal chest is well-known on Escutcheon: the chest became so popular that everyone knew the secret quite quickly.[1] However, in the early days, chests were all unique, without the exact same method of unlatching.[2]
Known Jackal Chests
- The jackal chest ultimately used by Lisinthir Nase Galare on the Throneworld[1] was originally owned by Doriel Emil Galare. It was one of the very first ones of its kind, used in her youth when she was "a terrible flirt." It was sent by Jahir to Lisinthir, and was made of dark, finely carved wood, well polished, with gilding that had begun to flake. It was additionally padded by Fleet to avoid attracting attention when scanned. It contained a set of claw knives and a secret rampant.[2]
