List of Chatcaavan Titles

Among Chatcaavans, titles are preferentially used over names by those with them, as names denote status either as a low-ranking male (e.g. Uuvek, Oviin) or a female or child (e.g. Firemint, Whisper).

Queen Ransomed The most prominent female of the Empire. Formerly the Slave Queen (the "most exalted and most debased female"[1]). Exclusive The Queen Ransomed
Second Right hand of the Chatcaavan Emperor. Exclusive Second, formerly Worldlord
Third Left hand of the Emperor. Third is a rank that acts as a minister to foreign entities. Until the advent of finding the Alliance and Lisinthir's ascension to the role, it has in practice mostly been stealing slaves from the Alliance and treating with pirates. Throneworld Thorn Presumably fairly high-ranking, as the Thorn took over some of the duties of Third-Who-Was when the latter was out of favor.[1]
Hand 'Hand' is a title awarded to any Chatcaavan who serves as the executor of the wishes of a high-level male. Basically combined administrative assistant and thug. Any Chatcaavan of sufficient rank can elevate another male to the status of his Hand. Not exclusive The Hand who was formerly Deputy-East, answering to Second, formerly Worldlord The Hand named Baavo, answering to Third-Who-Was
Knife Head of security for the Queen Ransomed. Fell out of use when the Queen Ransomed became the Slave Queen, and has only recently come into use with the most recent Emperor to protect his Queen Ransomed. Exclusive Hautsuun, one of the Worldlord's many sons, formerly Reserve-East Huuru, formerly the Knife, now Liaison
Liaison Liaison to aliens. Exclusive(?) Huuru, formerly Knife None; new title
Surgeon Awarded to physicians who treat Inside males. Surgeons are always male, and considered Outside. They may be employed anywhere Inside males are common, in governments, in system and naval capacities, and in large enough population centers. See also Imperial Surgeon. Not exclusive

Imperial Surgeon Chief surgeon to the Throneworld Court Exclusive Sehkvit
Triage Male who receives injured males and directs them according to priority.[2] There are least two at the Throneworld Court, one for day shifts and one for night. Not exclusive The individual Triage who was sent from the Clinic when the Queen Ransomed sought refuge there
Bodyguard A title invented by the Queen Ransomed, initially for Lunet Silin Eddings. The Bodyguard who watches over Lunet. None; new title
Master of the Preparation Room A male Chatcaavan who oversees the crafting of jewelry for alien slaves and females in the preparation room, as well as the process of adorning them for presentation. The Slave Queen brings them to him and conveys any special request expressed by the male who brought them to her. When Third told her to ask the Master of the Preparation Room to hide the fact that he had already raped and abused them, she "forgot" to do so, and instead claimed that the wounds should be emphasized with cosmetics to accentuate their misery. Males of the preparation room were Outside.[2]
Pilot A pilot with sufficient skill or respect to merit a title. Not exclusive Lisinthir's Pilot when entering the Empire for the first time
Mother The title given to a female of the Emperor's harem who is pregnant with one of his children. Denoted by special jewelry, given to her by the Queen. Not exclusive Emerald; unusual in that she retained the title after giving birth, due to changes in the nature of the Imperial Court
Lead Attendant An unofficial title that one of the attendants in the Imperial nursery granted to herself (on the principle that, as she could not speak, she could call herself whatever she wished). Sojourner Stars
Priestess An ancient title, revived by the Queen Ransomed Stripes
Slave An honorary title given to slaves who belong directly to the Emperor; considered among the Chatcaava to be of higher status than slaves called by name[1] Not exclusive Laniis Baker, who found the title sufficiently distressing that the Queen called her Khaska instead[1]
Worldlord The Chatcaavan in charge of a particular world. Not exclusive (except to a particular world) Second (formerly Worldlord)
