Oviin

A Chatcaavan castrate, who helped the Queen Ransomed and served as attendant to Jahir while he was in captivity.

Physical Description

Golden, winged. Golden gleaming mane, with a fringe cut on an angle over his face. Lambent turquoise eyes, almost too dark for beauty. Lovely voice. Eidetic memory. "He must have been castrated before puberty, to lack the ridging along the brows, the extra horns, and the muscle and hide development of uncut males."[1] His talons are filed down to points so short they look almost like nails. A pretty and obedient manner, but beneath it, melancholy, curiosity, a steady purpose, a secret determination.[2]

Biography

Used flowers to try to warn the Queen Ransomed of the problems after the Emperor's departure in Amulet Rampant.

Slain by the Usurper.

Longed to learn the shapechange; Everdawn vowed to learn it for him after his death, to honor him.

Quotes

  • “You would tell me that I should do as I wish? That I should not think of your suffering? Or of the suffering of the Chatcaava who do not deserve the Usurper, do not deserve this war the court is inflicting on the Empire? You would tell me my death is more important than those things?”[3]
  • “The ideal of all that is and was and will be exists in the Living Air. And it is Perfect. We are the manifestation of one of those ideals: that which can know Perfection. To see that Perfection clearly we must act in ways that befit our status, as people, as souls incarnate. We cannot devolve to the status of animals.”[3]
  • “Tell me exactly, Ambassador. I remember everything I hear, Perfectly.”[3]
  • “To be Inside is to suffer.”[4]
