Renii Qodii
One of Zafiil's childhood friends, who later became Daqan's helper.
Appearance and Personality
Long-limbed girl with green eyes, cool gray fur, and white and red Paint. High-strung and sensitive.
Biography
Born in the village of Qodii, Renii became Zafiil's friend when Zafiil fostered on Quafiirla. She Kindled shortly after an encounter with an iifaul in the forest, where she, Zafiil, and Duzai had been playing.[1]
After meeting Daqan at his first appearance, she decided to follow him, and did so faithfully until the advent of the FireBorn: "I’m going to follow you, Daqan. Wher- ever you go, I want to go. To be your strength. To be at your side until Qiifaula comes!"[2] Zafiil folded her into her retinue, where she stayed until a difference of opinion about the use of Other weapons drove her to confide in Iiden, who at the time was espousing the evils of the Others. This meeting did not go well, and Renii returned to Zafiil after the fateful encounter at the planned port/memorial site, with renewed zeal for the FireBorn's cause. "I tried to live the life of Daqan’s life- mate, though I wasn’t his lifemate. Then I tried to live the life of Iiden’s confidant, and that was... another story that wasn’t real. I think I keep trying to live all these other lives because I’m afraid I’m no one."[3]
She became interested in Other poetry, and then Other languages and music, and dedicated herself to their study, becoming the foremost Faulfenzair linguist. "...they have poems! Poems that have rhythm, like the Wisdom Scrolls' texts! I don't understand the Other tongue fluently enough yet, but the few I've been able to read are amazing."[4]
It was Renii who made the request of Zafiil, to enlist the aid of other Faulfenza in learning the Other languages, "because having people to talk to would make it easier than just reading it or reciting aloud to myself." This was how Renii met her lifemate, another linguist: "as star-crazed as you were when we were children,"[5] as she said to Zafiil, with whom she produced two sons, rare twins, "one rambunctious, the other cautious," during the FireBorn's lifetime.[6] She had a third child, this one presumably after Zafiil's death.[7]
She was present for the Alliance's arrival, and for the signing of the treaty, in 311 BA, where she faithfully communicated one of Zafiil's last directives, this one intended for Daqan: that he should be free to go explore the galaxy. "...she said this moment would come and here we are, so... Daqan, staying here... there’s nothing for you here. Not anymore. You should travel. See the things she saw. It’s what she wanted. She told me I should tell you that it was all right for you to go."[7]
