Starbase Ro

The sector starbase for Ro, the "eastern" edge of space claimed by the Alliance.

History

The contract for the city-sphere was awarded to a group of Glaseah (as the species with a homeworld in the adjacent sector), but they brought on a large phalanx of Hinichi initially, which informed the culture considerably. They were partway into the planning and initial building when they thought to contact the Platies, and were surprised to discover the Platies wanted a sizable part in the enterprise... which is how the major city-sphere for the starbase became an aquasphere. Starbase Ro contains, to date, the largest body of water in a city-sphere of any starbase.

In this way, the two species with homeworlds closest to Ro (the Glaseah and the Platies) are majority populations on Starbase Ro, with the Hinichi (from the sector adjacent the Platies) sensibly participating.

Most Alliance installations with large bodies of water go for littoral installations, with cities built up to shoreside cliffs or beaches. Ro's major city-sphere, however, went full-on underwater city, with even the port opening onto water. It is one of the few starbases where integration of water and aired environments is ubiquitous; while the big Fleet shipyards are in the Core, the only Fleet shipyard that specializes in the (rare) water-environment vessels with Platy-driven engineering sections is sited at Starbase Ro. After the First Chatcaavan War resulted in the destruction of the Selnor and Tam-Ley shipyards, Ro's facility began seeing major build-up to take up some of the slack.
