Layouts

  • There is a garden adjacent to the medplex. [2]
  • Captain's Quarters are one deck down and almost directly under the bridge, and are carpeted with a deep pile carpet.[3] It takes less than a minute to travel from captain's quarters to the second level of the bridge by elevator.[4]
  • The bridge has two levels. "Outside the sounds of the bridge enveloped her: the soft murmur of voices, the hum and musical interfaces of the computers, the sound of the lift rising between floors. She stopped at the balcony on the edge of the loft, gazing down on the activity at ground level. The ceiling-high solidigraphic display floated a three-dimensional hemisphere of the planet; its top left corner displayed the chronolog, current coordinates, and ship’s status in a reassuring cool light blue."[5]
  • The Cat's Fang Bistro was placed, "out of expedience or cruelty," within sight of the gym.[6]

Amenities and Technology

  • The solidigraphic display in Alysha Forrest's office on the Stardancer floats the Alliance sigil when at rest. When initiating a connection, it displays addresses in the lower corner as it routes the connection request. The bottom right corner turns from amber to blue when a straight holographic connection is made. It turns matte blue when the signal is lost.[5]
  • The computer has a cultured, androgynous tenor voice.[7]
  • The officer's club is the Cat's Fang Bistro. It serves a good beer that they brew themselves,[8] and apple dumplings made from the apple cultivars in the the greenspaces. It is a combination restaurant, bar, and cafe, and is always open. It also hosts live entertainment, parties, and the lecture series.[6]
  • The medplex has a fish tank in it, to add a note of serenity.[7]
  • The gym features treadmills and other cardio machines, free weights, mats for exercise and martial arts, and gaming grids. It also includes plus a pool that has the closed-off plates that would lead to the water environment if the Stardancer had one.[9]
  • There are small chapels on the mid-deck.[2]
  • Compost chutes allow for disposal of organic garbage.[2]

Gardens and Greenspaces

  • The greenspaces on the lower decks include edible apple cultivars[10], including the Curlew, a good eating apple.[2] The resulting apples are used in food served at the officer's club, and in the outpatient snack basket in the medplex. There are trees near the bistro, including willowblend.[6] Some corridors are lined with additional flora outside the gardens, but "full seasonal-lighting and planting upgrades required substantial refits to the infrastructure and software of the ship, and none of that had been installed yet."[2]
  • The entrance to the garden on the medplex level is a large arch.[2]
  • The garden adjacent to the medplex, used for helping people heal, is called the Firebird Garden, "named for the firebird trumpets Maintenance had planted at the request of the healers. The fitness division of the medplex synthesized hormone complexes for the Karaka’A in the crew from the buds, but Taylitha knew that only because hers was the second-to-last signature on the medical stores requisition. Everyone else aboard appreciated the trumpets for their brilliant scarlet hue and the icy white throats of their blossoms and remained blissfully ignorant of the paperwork they incurred." [2] The gardens also feature extensive hydroponics.[11]

Crew Culture

A feminic ship.[9] The crew complement is currently 70/30 in terms of the felid races versus others; Taylitha thinks in Faith in the Service that the mix is moving more toward 60/40.

Alysha "found the relative homogeneity of her crew bemusing after years of working in more diversified environments."[9]

  • There's a volunteer chaplain corps, which (at the time of the Gledig incident) had no approved priestess of the polytheist Harat-Shariin religion.[12]
  • The science department has a lecture series. [6]
  • There is a jazz band, the Cat's Pajamas.[13]

Happy Houris

The party/event-organizing club on the Stardancer is known as the Happy Houris. They not only handle extraordinary events (parties and celebrations), but also crew entertainments, like movie schedules.[14]

Members include:

  • Darya (head)
  • Mariledge[15]

History/Commissioning/Achievements

At the time of Alysha's taking command, the Stardancer is "a few years old" by Taylitha's standard[16]; by the calendar, a little over four years old. That would put its build date at 460-461 BA, depending on what time of year it was commissioned.

Captains prior to Alysha:

  • Captain Metricia Heartfoot, Tam-illee; left Fleet on extended maternity leave.
  • Captain Leary, human male; interim captain during Heartfoot's maternity leave. Retired now. Receives mail addressed to his doppelgangers, Captains Lery and Levy, much to his irritation.

Service History

Approximately six months after Alysha Forrest was assigned to the Stardancer, the ship and crew was sent to investigate a potential civil war brewing on the planet Gledig;[10]; the crew successfully brought the war to an end and returned the missing Lieutentant Commander Svetlana Karishenikov to the service.[12]

After Gledig, the Stardancer was sent on a mission to resupply the forty-odd stations orbiting the Cat's Eye Nebula, including Cat's Eye Station 40.[17]

The Stardancer was later sent on a mapping expedition, in which they mapped and scanned five barren planets and then Amity, where they stopped to investigate alien ruins. The crew found two types of sentient life: the nearly-extinct Small Ones and the aquatic Octopi, the latter of whom they convinced to welcome contact with the Alliance as visitors and friends.[18]
