Eldritch Houses

The Eldritch are organized by families and groups together into Houses. Typically, the male marries into the female's family, but on occasions where the male's family is richer, sometimes the female will elect to become a member of his instead. One family takes responsibility for the leadership of the House.

Most of the original Eldritch Houses were lost to attrition, but two, notably, were declared destroyed by royal fiat: Corel's, Firilith; and Asaniefa. Firilith was purged by the Church, which was formally created in order to deal with such problems, and almost all its members were slain. One or two might have survived by fleeing into the peasantry. Asaniefa was dissolved during the events of the novel Laisrathera.

Noble Houses have 5 to 7 families within them. Typically all the power and wealth is collected in one or two of those families, with the others existing as adjuncts to the majors within the House.

Existing Houses have become factionalized into those who are in favor of more interaction with aliens, and isolationists, and have been sorted in that fashion here.

Heraldic Conventions

Each house has an animal (until Laisrathera, which chose a star for its symbol); within each house, each family might portray that animal in a specific attitude. The reigning family has heraldic modifications:

• Monarch: crowned animal
• Monarch's consort: animal with minor crown
• Heir: animal with circlet and flame
• Heir's consort: animal with circlet

Neutral Houses

It is very hard to remain neutral in the clash between the isolationists and Liolesa's partisans. These houses manage it by carefully marrying equal numbers of people into both factions.
