For mentions of cuisines, foods, and drinks in the various species.

Some things here:

Pelted Foods

Foodstuffs

Fruits and Vegetables

  • chenfruit
  • kalven nut
  • More-almond
  • rooderberries
  • millberries
  • Asaniian bittersweet (used in calming teas)
  • wildfood (this is a generic term for any not-farmed food from any planet)
  • Hinichirel pears[1]
  • Terran-origin fruits and vegetables:

In Some Things Transcend, Borden says something about 'fruits from the terrien family' being from Seersana or Karaka'Ana.

Snack Foods

  • Cheese and hot pepper popcorn, and chocolate-caramel (or maybe candy crunch) popcorn[4]

Drinks

  • Kerinne
  • A stimulant beverage that looks like coffee, smells like chocolate and herbs, and is strong enough to make your hair stand up.[4]
  • Axeman ale [5]
  • Heartbomb cocktail [6]
  • Paga has a seaweed alcohol in Healing Waters, I think?
  • Lisinthir drinks seltzer water with "some liquor made from an astringent seaweed native to Seersana, brightened by a twist of lime." [7]
  • Tepoli amber[8]

Desserts

Food and Genies

  • At the time that Alysha Forrest was on the UAV Songlance, the ship's genie had 3,429 "basic" chocolate chip cookie recipes, of which "the healthiest" was nothing to write home about.[4]
  • A recipe can be scanned multiple times to create variation so that each iteration isn't identical.[11]

Rations and Emergency Foods

  • K-plus ration[12]
  • Vitamin-plus rations, which went out of fashion for logistical reasons[12]
  • Honey-nut and honey-granola bars[13][14][15]
  • Fruit bars[16]

Foods by Culture or Location

Jovian Foods

From one of the Alliance's earliest colonies, based on Ethiopian cuisine.[17]

  • Flatbread (described as similar to injera)
  • Meat and vegetable stew
  • Hibiscus juice
  • Deep-fried leeks and zucchini
  • Whole-roasted cauliflower
  • Shahi tukra (bread, toasted, soaked in a thick, sweet sauce, then toasted again, strewn with golden almond slivers, pistachios, and cashews)

Harat-Shariin Family-Style Dinner

Normally served in a large room "with its patrons strewn across the floor of the enormous central room, lounging in one another’s laps and eating from communal bowls, or playing games, or cuddling." Private rooms also available. Most foods designed for feeding one another with one's fingers, eating from the same bowls and drinking from the same cups.[7]

  • Sangria (with wine-soaked fruit hand-fed)
  • Seafood

UAV Cometfencer Restaurant

The UAV Cometfencer has a cook--sort of. The Cometfencer has a person who calls himself a cook who spends most of his time scouring the u-banks and newsstreams for new and interesting recipes to feed to the genie.[5] These include the following:

  • Cubed and marinated orangefin mackerel on a bed of purple rice, with a vinaigrette of sesame oil, rice vinegar, and rice wine, with crisp onions and near-avocadoes
  • Burgers with onion rings and fries
  • Axeman ale

Chatcaavan Foods

  • Food is largely eaten with the fingers; claws are used to slice and tear. There is knife at a place setting, but there is something reminiscent of a fork.[15]
  • Extremely meat-heavy[15]
  • Raw food is common--fruit, vegetable, and meat--but some prefer a char on their meat for the flavor. It is still cooked drippingly rare.[15]
  • Brandylike before-dinner drinks, blood-dark, tasting of fire. Unpalatable to some Pelted[15]
  • A fruitier but still strong after-dinner brandylike drink[15]
  • Meat may be slaughtered in advance, but in private dining may be killed at the table by the diners[15]
  • Vegetables shaped like red spears[15]
  • Flavored ices, including one "that reminded Lisinthir of both mint and lime."[15]
  • Tea-wine[18][19], a Chatcaavan drink, sometimes served with breakfast

Eldritch Foods

  • Gentleman's punch[20]
  • Saerrie-flower tea (this is in Wingless, but based on the name it sounds like it's probably Eldritch in origin?)[15]

Specific Meals

Dark Lighthouse

(I think this is probably Terran foods since it's stuff that Avram Hancock learned from his mother, but it's possible that he's from the Moon or Mars or something?)[11]

  • Bread and butter
  • Tortellini, stuffed with wildfood, cheese, and mushrooms
  • Tomato sauce
  • Cheesecake drizzled with caramel and chocolate
