Sector Sizes
When the Alliance was first colonized, sector sizes were determined by Well constraints and Fleet patrolling requirements. Every sector is about 7 days across, traveling at Well 3, which meant that (historically), the fastest moving Fleet ships could travel that distance in 3 days. Starbases (which serve primarily as Fleet bases) are located, if at all possible, equidistant from the borders of each sector, so that ships can be deployed anywhere within the sector within 3.5 days at an average speed, and 1.5 at the fastest.
The fastest ships can now make it across the entire sector in one day in emergencies. Sectors continue to be sized assuming Well 4 as the emergency speed, and Well 3 as average.
The distance from a theoretical starbase in the exact center of a sector to its border is a lap (so crossing a sector requires "two laps".) In practice, starbases are rarely in that theoretical center, and while Fleet and mapping personnel still talk distance in terms of laps, the true distance from the (actual) starbase to its sector border is known, jokingly, as a furlong, for reasons lost to history. For this reason, a furlong is also Fleet slang for the delta between practice and theory (most commonly heard in Engineering departments).
