Alliance Entertainment
Things people in the Alliance do for fun (here's where I put mention of games, sports, pastimes I've said in books somewhere).
Did you know there was a "Fleet Commandos 3" 3deo? Probably was a 1 and 2. "Big Manly Axes!"
Arts
Ballet
There are all-Pelted and mixed company (and only human, naturally) ballet companies, but the first all-Pelted ballet company was started on Karaka'Ana, L'Atelier Enchante. They still debate over which form is better for digitigrade Pelted dancers: true en pointe and en plat, where the dancers dance on the balls of their feet.
- Salle Le Peletier is still around!
- The Karaka'A have their famous ballet company, though, which Simone Foster is part of.
Visual Art
Opus Posters
The Opus posters are a highly popular set of posters, reproduced so frequently that few people in the Alliance would not be able to recognize them, and that it is very likely to be the most requested print in the Alliance Core. They are comparatively simple images: "on a matte black background, a small gray figure of a man, arms raised as if conducting, with an intricate DNA helix against the right margin and a ghostly set of eyes just visible beside it. Which set depended on the poster: Opus #1 had a vulpine's oval pupil in an equally animal socket, for Joy, the prototype who would later become the stock for the Seersa race; Opus #2 had a domestic cat's slit pupil in a human's eye socket, for the Karaka'An, like Taylitha."
There are limited edition versions of various kinds; one (owned by Avram Hancock is remarqued in gold foil, includes a reproduction of Joseph Shandlin's signature, and includes a lock of hair. Its cost would have been between one and five thousand fin, depending on the hair. (Hancock's edition contained hair that was a reproduction of Holly's.)[1]
Sydnie Unfound owned a reproduction of Opus #2, the painting of which was attributed to Beryl Warren. [2]
Poetry and Songs
Exodus Lullabies
Written in Meridan. Alysha Forrest translated some into Universal for the library at her finishing school, as her father had sung them to her as a child.
- See Lullabies, see also Songs and Poems
Music
- Lenaldin-jun River Suite[3]
- Pianos are still handcrafted, and individual musicians of high enough caliber will select specific ones for performances and have them shipped to the concert halls, and tuned there to their specifications.
- No Rock Operas mentioned yet
Composers
- Acron, a post-Exodus composer known for poignant ballads about the post-Exodus experience, about identiy, loss, and "feeling at sea in a vast and uncaring universe." Died young after "living too hard."[4]
- Pavwent, an orchestral composer working in the early 400s BA. Sonata for a Still Pond (a "piece not out of place in a romance soundtrack"). Evolved a great deal throughout his career.[4]
- Samelion, another orchestrial composer. Grasslands, (a piece with at least two movements). [4]
- Seranov, a Harat-Shariin composer for orchestra. [4]
Performers
- Ancelote Sylvain, seen in concern by Jahir and Vasiht'h while they were therapists at Starbase Veta
- Kavisky, who performed her swansong at the Vercao Metropolitan, when she played Seranov’s Fourth Concerto. This would be during or prior to Gardenia Segal's life, so 414 BA or before. [4]
Sports and Physical Activity
In Dreamhearth, the former Fleet officer liked to go... was it skiing? Look that up and put it here.
Fencing
See Fencing.
Rhedball
Mentioned in Alysha's fall; no details. [3]
Riding
Travel
Cruises
- "Their first flight was on a passenger liner that delivered Core citizens to an out-sector hub home to several cruise companies. It had bemused them both to learn that many of the worlds on the border were popular tourist destinations, whether for tourism, culture, food, or spiritual retreat." [5]
- That disastrous ship excursion detailed in Dreamstorm (Fiction)
Games
- Pantheon, a card game
- Quirds, some kind of lawn game[6]
- Go Fish, played with a set of cards with a slightly different set of suites (e.g., "Queen of Fire").[7]
Visual Entertainment
3deos
3deos are frequently used for entertainment. There are 3deo space operas,[8] action hero movies,[9] erotic films,[10] and fantasy.[11] 3deos may also have a solidigraphic component.
There are multiple versions of 3deo technology, including amphitheater-style immersive 3deos and projection models, that vary in cost.[12]
Productions
- Secret Agent Silver Vixen. A 3deo film series.[13]
- Mina Birina, Habitat Rescuer. A children's entertainment show, watched by Rayne's children.[14]
- The Three Privateers, an action serial (and musical) including "one lady’s man, one apologizing for their
actions and getting away with it, and one practical one."[15]
