Rough Map of the Capital

The capital city of the Eldritch planet Escutcheon, home to Ontine palace. Roughly, "the silvered city," or "the argent city."

At a Glance

  • Population: Roughly 3500
  • Province and Parcel: Jesa, Galare

History

  • Sediryl had "lived in the Alliance long enough to take most of its miracles for granted, but even she was anticipating the sight of a large monument in motion. Old Eldritch buildings were replete with stone carvings, and their capital city had its share of fountains and statues, but no one had erected a new monument in Sediryl’s lifetime."[1]

Geography

"Armin watched the capital scroll past and his impression of it was overwhelmingly that it was tall, clean, and pale… much like the people who inhabited it. White stone roads, white stone buildings, pennants snapping in the sea breeze, fountains splashing, the spires of an enormous cathedral, the sound of its bells tolling the quarter hour. Pedestrians, far less numerous than in any Alliance city, and walking much farther apart. No trash anywhere, or filth, despite the occasional horse-drawn vehicle that trotted past them, and the roads were broad enough for three of those abreast but Armin saw almost none. Single riders were more common, though ‘common’ was misleading. He wouldn’t have characterized it as a bustling city. More like… a serene one. Or an empty one. It was hard not to inhale the cleanliness of the wind, unmarred by any of the expected smells of close habitation, and not wonder whether the entire place was an illusion."[2]

Districts

Noble's Row: Where the noble Houses of the Eldritch maintain townhouses for when they come to the capital for the summer and winter courts. Individual families may choose to stay in the palace itself if they have apartments there, or they might prefer to use the townhouses if they want some distance from the activity level at the court. A townhouse is also useful for hosting events, which is harder to arrange at the palace.

Sarel Jisiensire is on the east side, near the cliff.

Avenues

Described as having "stone roads."[3]

Parks

  • At least one public park near the cliffs where you can ride horses, with an "out-of-the-way copse." [4]

Landmarks

Establishments

  • In response to Caramia’s questions about the Eldritch middle class, Sehvi suggested a few stops to their driver: a bakery for pastries and candies, a boutique that sold ribbons and lace, and a shop that sold paper and a few books. To be exact, seven books."[2]
  • Coffee and chocolate shops.[6] There is at least one chocolate shop in a 'middling district', which serves hot chocolate (in small cups, can be alcohol-spiked), and tea-like foods on tiered plates.[7]
  • Schools: Jedan's wanders "had shown him that teaching methods varied throughout the populace, much the way they did on Qufiil: there were apprenticeships, and small, informal lessons, and tutors, and in the city, the only schools." Eldritch schools meet every other day.[6]. The schools in the capital teach both Eldren and Universal. There are reading and writing lessons, and then a recess outside in a yard. Afternoon lessons are in figuring (math).[6] There is typically one teacher.
