Biography

Ralafin was a ship's captain in the early days of Fleet (and well suited to its mission, since he was a restless sort who was happiest on the deck of a ship, doing something). An accident beached him on Selnor in 25 BA; while in convalescence he complained that such accidents were the result of a lack of standardization in training (and thus, expectations) amid the crew. At the time, Fleet had been in operation for 23 years, and was turning out ships as fast as they could build them, and his complaints found fertile ground. While he was grounded he was put on a commission to form a plan for the first Fleet Academe, which, due to his personality, he inevitably ended up leading. He was so foundational to its principles and plans, in fact, that he was inevitably named the Academe's first commandant, back when the campus was only a handful of buildings and a park (initial building completed in 26 BA). He barely lasted a year before he was ready to go, and since by then he was no longer invalided out, they sent him back into space and did a search for a more settled personality to continue his work.

He remains immortalized as the Academe's founder, and his first year (if one stretches the definition of a year to include the time spent on the commission) is held up as an example of responsibility in the face of an actionable problem. The fact that he didn't stay is tactfully glossed over. The park in the Selnor campus was renamed for him, but it does not include a statue of him because it wasn't built to honor him, initially.
