Maire

Leader of the Pro-Accord faction on Gledig, and eventually Gledig's governor.

Physical Characteristics

A slender, ginger furred Hinichi with black hair bobbed just above her shoulders. Her eyes are green.[1]

Biography

Maire was Governor Kerenkev's aide, and was responsible for sending the messages to the Colony Bureau about pirate raids, but nobody ever responded. She left the Governor's Office to work with the Pro-Accord faction, in part because she strongly suspected that something amiss was going on, but couldn't prove it.[2][3]

Maire went on to become the leader of the Pro-Accords. She clashed with both Svetlana Karishenikov[1] and the Fleet representatives Taylitha Basil and Laelkii Takara Lifeweave[4]. When she received intelligence that the Secessionists were going to attempt to take over the Pro-Accord base, she elected to evacuate her people and use its munitions to collapse the underground base on them.[5]

After Alysha Forrest oversaw the destruction of the pirates that had been plaguing the colony, and dueled Dylan Brushnie for the future of the colony, the future of Gledig--stay with the Alliance or secede--was put up to a vote; the colonists near-universally elected to remain with the Alliance, and chose Maire to replace Kerenkev as the new colony Governor.[6]

Maire presided over the funeral pyre for the dead in both the pirate raid and the civil war.[7]

Quotes

  • "I’m trying to do the right thing, but some days I wake up wondering… what if Brushnie’s right? What if the man I was working for was doing… all the awful things the Secessionists accuse him of? What if Fleet never heard we were in trouble, and I was sitting at that desk, day after day, presiding over that failure? And now I’m here instead, trying to keep things together, but what if they’re the wrong things?" [2]
  • "That’s not what this war was supposed to be about. It wasn’t supposed to be a war at all. But it’s a little too late for that now, isn’t it."[5]
  • "The cavalry’s arrived. Maybe it’s decades later than anyone hoped, but we have to recognize hope when it comes. Trust that it is what it says it is. Otherwise… otherwise this war will have killed us, even if we win."[8]
  • "I’m not proud of it. I’m not even sure it had to be done, though it appears Gledig Colony disagrees with me. I guess working for the governor made me a victim, and standing up for the Alliance made me a hero."[6]

Trivia

  • Refers to God[2], but does not seem to swear.
