Kerenkev

A portrait of the character

Kerenkev was the governor of Gledig during the events of Sword of the Alliance, and for some time before.

Physical Characteristics

Kerenkev is a Hinichi wolfine man, middle-aged. His face is humanoid, but his beard is reminiscent of his lupine forbears. He dresses well and follows Alliance trends and fashions closely, sometimes at significant expense.

Recent History

Kerenkev was elected colony governor by the pro-Accord majority because that majority of the populace considered him a reasonable man. He began a policy of not listening to Secessionists at all, even after Dylan Brushnie organized into an official political party.

At some time shortly after the UAV Voidsong became assigned to duty in Sector Koph, Kerenkev began to bribe the captain, Baerut Flait, to ignore the planet. This allowed him to more easily redirect and sell resources intended for the colony for profit. While the civil war that predated him caused much of the destruction and death that hamstrung the colony, the inability to import modern technology and supplies meant that they would remain struggling and unable to pay off their Indenture. Though his corruption and bribery was suspected, no one could reliably pin it on him, not even his aide, Maire, who left to lead the underground Pro-Accords rather than continue to work with him.

Kerenkev used his ill-gotten gains partly to support his lavish lifestyle, including the most fashionable clothes and an ostentatious mansion., but mostly to arrange for the illegal elections and bribery of the rest of the council. Accordingly, the council had no interest in contradicting him, so long as the money kept flowing (except Brad Courtland, who had his own plans).

Unrest and Secessionist activity increased along with a sudden upswing in pirate activity, going from very little since the first few years of the colony to attacks every few months for the prior four years. Kerenkev dealt with this violently, by setting tanks and soldiers on peaceful protesters, and rounding up and killing Secessionists and non-Secessionist protesters alike. He did this without due process, and in secret.

Though he presented a calm facade, the visit of the UAV Stardancer to Gledig worried him, as the last thing he needed was Fleet scrutiny.\ He invited Alysha Forrest, Taylitha Basil, Laelkii Takara Lifeweave, and Alastar Virgil to the Governor's Mansion for a formal supper. Kerenkev then immediately sends orders to distress the damage even more and then put up official renovation signs, to convince the visiting Fleet members that they are simply tearing down to rebuild,, and ordering the populace to prevent the Fleet team to visit certain areas (such as the clinic, filled with wounded from Adderey.

During the dinner, Kerenkev was successful in keeping the representatives from saying much to the Fleet officers, with the exception of Courtland. However, the dinner was attacked by Secessionist forces led by Gavin Medearin, and he was heavily injured and then captured. Dylan ordered him dressed for the weather and brought along when they made their move on the Pro-Accord base.

Kerenkev remained under Secessionist control when they went to attack the pro-Accord base, but survived the deliberate self-destruction of the base. When Alysha Forrest returned to settle things, he admitted to theft from the colony via redirection of needed supplies, and to bribery both of Baerut Flait and the council representatives.

After being removed from office, Kerenkev was slated to be tried on Gledig, Kerenkev's belongings went to auction offworld, to recover money he'd made by selling the colony's supplies for his own profit.
