He was deeply suspicious of Svetlana Karishenikov when she joined, despite her cousin Carey's endorsement and the initial plan that he would serve as her second.[1] He was extremely critical of how privileged and "comfortable" she was, and persistently shot her down until she confronted him and fought him hand-to-hand, ultimately defeating him.[2] She later learned that Owen was "notoriously prickly, and more tolerated than liked," and so her direct challenge served her better than it hurt her.[3]
