History

A Chatcaavan outpost world, Sharsenne was one of the sites of the Alliance/Chatcaavan peace treaty talks; in particular, the Chatcaavan site where the initial treaty was drafted in 159 BA. (The matching site on the Alliance side was Za'ara; the treaty was signed in both locations).[2] Because of its history, this planet opened its doors to the Pelted and resulted in one of the rare mixed-population border worlds. It is owned by the Chatcaava, but only in a desultory way. This world had been settled seventy-eight years prior to the treaty but was not a popular destination for colonists and was never highly developed.

"Its cities were part Chatcaavan and part Pelted, and the intermingling of cultures had produced households where people of disparate races found their viewpoints narrowing to a single vision. Unlike the monolithic microculture of the Chatcaavan capital and its palace, here there was dissent among the Chatcaava over the beliefs they deemed fitting. And those disaffected dragons maintained contact with family members still in the Empire proper." [1]

Of Sharsenne in the modern age (and the tourism), Jahir says this to Vasiht'h: "Sharsenne. It is in one of the border sectors but settled long ago and not subject to much piracy or instability. Few ships fly there directly, but it is less a matter of safety and more of convenience and coordination of schedules. There are many flight plans that involve only one transfer."[3]

Tentative Timeline

  • 81 BA - Chatcaava settle world of Sharsenne
  • 159 BA - Treaty of Za'ara signed in Sharsenne, opens to Pelted visitors/colonists
  • 162 BA - Abbey of St. Jasmine of the Stars established
  • 479 BA (?) - Amber arrives to Sharsenne, makes his way to the Abbey.
  • 480-482 BA (ish) - the events of the Chatcaavan War bring Laniis and later Lisinthir to the world of Sharsenne.

Geography

Sharsenne's major continent

Na'er mentions 'brassy sunshine' and 'aquamarine' skies.[1]

The largest continent's first settled city was Jeintelle, with a handful of scattered other settlements in mountainous areas with good sky access. The arrival of the Pelted/humans caused several more cities to crop up on that landmass, one of which quickly outgrew the many smaller Chatcaavan ones (because of the Chatcaavan tendency toward territorial behaviors). The Chatcaava called this port town 'Bev Raug' ('some city/that city'), but the Pelted were debating either Landing, or Touchdown, until an idle sentiment from the Chatcaava ("how stupid is it to name the city for the fact that you go down to it, instead of that you launch up from it") led to someone nicknaming it 'Departing.' This was so catchy that it became known as Departure. Departure is considered by the Pelted to be the 'capital' of the world, but no one calls it that because the Chatcaava don't. They still think of their cities as the most legitimate, no matter their relative size.

These Chatcaavan towns have Chatcaavan names, but the Pelted gave them extra names (Lindy, Ours, Amien, Leans).

Flora and Fauna

  • We know there's a wild, tasseled grain that grows over four feet.[1]
  • riding beasts, "enough like a horse" to make Lisinthir nostalgic[4]

Cities and Landmarks

  • The Aeries (the Pelted name for the small Chatcaavan towns in the mountains)
  • Blue Skies (a ranching/agriculture town)
  • Departure (the unofficial capital)
  • Dilly (a small town on the grassland)
  • an orbital station that seems large enough to cater specifically to travelers and tourists as well as trade [4]
  • Jeintelle, the "Chatcaavan Venice". This was initially the single largest city on its continent (which is the largest of the continents on the planet), but after the Chatcaava shared it with the Pelted, an inland city with a spaceport outgrew it radically as a population center.
  • Abbey of St. Jasmine of the Stars

Language

Chatcaavan is mostly used in the Chatcaavan-dominant communities, and Universal in the more mixed population areas. The world is known by the Chatcaava as Che Zuchek (sheh ZUH shek), but this is so hard for most Pelted to pronounce that they never use it. Amusingly, however, within fifty years of the Alliance arriving to Sharsenne, the Chatcaava who have issues with Throneworld mores have naturalized the Pelted name for the world, and call it/spell it 'Charzen.' (In Chatcaavan, the syllable is on the first syllable, and in Universal, on the first.)

Many of the major cities have multiple names, depending on who's discussing them, like Jeintelle (raug che zuchek or Zantel).
