One of two Pelted assigned to the guard contingent for Jahir and Vasiht’h on trip to Ansealah. Swears by the Speaker-Singer, An, and Bast. Pretends not to find her partner Noah's jokes funny.[6] The genefixed felid daughter of a Seersa and Karaka'An. Her brother's a Seersa.

Female Lieutenant Cane remained on-planet during the ensign training retreat. During the one-on-ones to determine what had happened during the retreat, she interviewed Taylitha Basil[12]
Canidad [[Tam-illee] Selnor, Terracentrus, Fleet Academe Fleet Academe cadet A slender, fleet-footed Tam-illee woman. [13] She attended Fleet Academe at the same time as Alysha Forrest, and was on the same capture the flag team as Alysha and Baner Ajasiin.[13]

Cawdori Karaka'A Quickwater Reserve, ensign retreat Fleet ensign Female Cawdori and partner Damien were the second down the river after Alysha Forrest and Taylitha Basil, and were rescued when they hit the early portion of the rapids, but not before Damien was injured[14]

Chelsey Ferroe Human UAV Stardancer Fleet ensign Chelsey is a human woman with bronze skin and hair and light green eyes.[15] An ensign in Logistics, and one of only six humans on the UAV Stardancer. She is one of the few humans Fleet-associated humans who came through Fleet Academe and not on loan from the Terran Space Navy. She was Taylitha Basil's partner during the search for Alastar Virgil, and was with her when they found the cave system. Her mother has a pet fish.[15]
Chevitz UAV Songlance Fleet commander, engineering Commander Chevitz was Mike Beringwaite's superior on the UAV Songlance, in engineering. Beringwaite claimed that Chevitz was hammering him for the failures of an ensign in another department, Fren.[16]

Crispin D-Pers Rogue D-Per, formerlly Fleet Codeform is a warped and unnatural version of a Tam-illee. Third D-Per, badly damaged by trauma on his first posting under Luke Acron. Gallery

Dan Hawkins Human UAV Alabama Headmaster A human man with tan skin, a silvered beard, and a strong chin. He had an intense hazel gaze and did not blink often.[17] Headmaster of the UAV Alabama when it was captured by a gravity well and required evacuation with the aid of the UAV Scattersky. It was at this point that he realized that one of his crew, by then deceased, had smuggled a large number of refugees in cryogenic sleep into the cargo areas and he didn't know where. The refugees were ultimately rescued with the aid of Alysha Forrest and the Scattersky's Platies. A human man with tan skin, a silvered beard, and a strong chin. He had an intense hazel gaze and did not blink often.[17]

Daven Ulregard UAV Songlance Fleet lieutenant Male Attended the lieutenants' skullbash for the same shift of work as Alysha Forrest.At one point, Mike Beringwaite called him out for perceived slacking on the part of one of Daven's ensigns, Fren.[18] Enjoys spicy foods.[19]
Delin Seersa Quickwater Reserve, ensign retreat Fleet ensign Male Delin was a member of the Quickwater Reserve training retreat in the group "led" by Mike Beringwaite. He was one of the first to recognize the role Alysha Forrest played in moderating Beringwaite's poor leadership, and referred to her as "She."[20] [21] Delin became one of those to call Beringwaite out at the end of the retreat.[22] (Name alternately given as Derin in Chapter 6.)

Helped Lisinthir through the acclimatization regime at Fleet Central Hospital. Swears by the Angels, drinks beer, and tells off color BDSM jokes. Fayid Human UAV Songlance Fleet, engineer Male. Fayid is one of the "Old and Proud" on the Songlance, along with Mike Beringwaite, Friedman and Solomon, humans who are proud of their heritage and origins (and often also disaffected and bitter about their place relative to the Pelted in Fleet and the Alliance). He works under Mike Beringwaite in engineering on the Songlance, where he has put off many of his colleagues due to his prejudice and unhappiness working with Pelted. He is a talented engineer, especially with software, but never wanted to go to space and suffers frequent panic attacks; he had to fake his EVA scores to get into the Terran Space Navy. He did so despite his fear because the Navy (and later Fleet) was the only income his family had, and without it his younger sister and grandmother would die in extreme poverty. Beringwaite attempted to protect and defend him to ensure that he did not lose this vital job, and used him as an example to Alysha Forrest of where the prejudices and anger of the Old and Proud were coming from.[25]

Friedman is one of the "Old and Proud" on the Songlance, along with Mike Beringwaite, Solomon and Fayid, humans who are proud of their heritage and origins (and often also disaffected and bitter about their place relative to the Pelted in Fleet and the Alliance) He works under Mike Beringwaite in engineering on the Songlance, where he has put off many of his colleagues due to his prejudice and unhappiness working with Pelted. Unlike Fayid and Solomon, who are competent at their jobs (and more than competent in the case of Fayid), Friedman is, per Beringwaite, "totally an incompetent rhack-up." Beringwaite has chosen to keep him on as long as possible, however, because if he is the one who has him discharged, Fayid and Solomon will turn on him, which will prevent him from being able to protect them.[25]

Detail-oriented, good memory, and has a sense of humor.[28] Began working in Routing; eventually ends up on a team researching slides with Troy, something that was decided during the Birdsong Incident.[29] Has a coffee mug that reads 'if you can see your reflections in it, it's not dark enough.'

Jamais Beson Human Fleet admiral, in the Office of Exploration. Male. Had "aggressively black hair," caramel-colored skin, age lines, and dark eyes that "gleamed like pebbles, bright and alert."[32] As an admiral in the Office of Exploration, and was (unsurprisingly) very excited by the prospect of discovering another sapient alien species.[32]

Ji Woo Costello Human UAV Cometfencer Fleet A short human woman with light brown skin, dark hair shaved up one side and bobbed down the other, and monolidded eyes that "looked bored but didn't disguise the alert tension in her body."[35] A "reformed criminal"; one of the Old and Proud.[35]

Kairell Rhyt Hinichi UAV Nightslip; was on the ensign retreat at Quickwater Reserve Fleet ensign A large, heavyset Hinichi woman, "with enough throwback features to make her a textbook illustration for genetic engineering, including a demi-muzzle long enough to barely qualify for the 'demi.'" [36] Had very strong feelings in favor of patrol and exploration and against anything more military, especially ships much larger than a scout. She nearly created an altercation with an ensign from the UAV Diamondwing, a battlecruiser, but Alysha Forrest successfully defused the situation.[36] After the retreat, Taylitha Basil sought her out on the Nightslip to get to know her better.[12]
Kalvey UAV Songlance Fleet ensign Male. Worked in navigation, and made the mistake of appearing to not have enough to do to Lieutenant Commander Orien Felix, who assigned an exercise pulling up records on Chatcaavan incursions in the area.[38]

Katlin ?, female UAV Stardancer Fleet Implied to be Laelkii's second when she is absent; in Faith in the Service, after casualties are taken when the Stardancer engages with the Scythe, Laelkii asks whether Katlin is doing all right without her.[39]
Kaymah Naysha UAV Scattersky Fleet lieutenant Female. Worked in Navigation on the Scattersky, along with the Platy navigation crew. During the rescue of the UAV Alabama, she translated for the Platies, who were able to identify the location of the refugees in cryogenic sleep before the ship was destroyed.[17]

Matthew Brighthaven Human Fleet admiral Male. Matthew Brighthaven is a former member of the Terran Space Navy on loan to the Pelted Fleet. He spent time as the commandant of Fleet Academe, and is part of the Fleet Admiralty.
Maurbery Tam-illee UAV Scattersky Fleet, captain Male. Has large, dark brown ears and green eyes.[17] Served as captain during the Scattersky's evacuation of the UAV Alabama, when Alysha Forrest disobeyed orders to continue to search for the refugees stored in cryogenic sleep on the spindles. His response was both exasperated and proud. Maurbery is noted as particularly cheerful under normal circumstances. [17]

Sheryl was a manager at the canoe center, providing the ensigns visiting for training with safety information, access to supplies, and information on the specific routes.[58] Mike Beringwaite ignored her warning not to take Route D, leading to several injuries and the forfeiture of the team mission.[14]
Solomon Human UAV Songlance Fleet, engineer Male. Solomon is one of the "Old and Proud" on the Songlance, along with Mike Beringwaite, Friedman and Fayid, humans who are proud of their heritage and origins (and often also disaffected and bitter about their place relative to the Pelted in Fleet and the Alliance). He works under Mike Beringwaite in engineering on the Songlance, where he has put off many of his colleagues due to his prejudice and unhappiness working with Pelted. Solomon had a bad upbringing with many disadvantages, and ended up in prison as a young man. When he was was released, he joined the Terran Space Navy, where he straightened out, but was later traded to Fleet, where his anger at the Pelted has caused him to make numerous mistakes. Beringwaite attempted to protect and defend him to ensure that he did not get discharged and end up back in prison and used him as an example to Alysha Forrest of where the prejudices and anger of the Old and Proud were coming from.[25]

Zennir Selnor, Terracentrus, Fleet Academe Fleet cadet Male. Zennir had purple eyes, which allowed Alysha Forrest to recognize him as the thief. [63] "The Marauder," a bully at Fleet Academe who stole precious items belonging to other cadets as a mean-spirited prank. Zennir was a senior cadet stole a number of precious items of little to no material value but of great emotional value to their owners, such as a photo of Nathan Lifeweave owned by his widow, Laelkii Takara Lifeweave. He went uncaught for a long time, in part because it was taken to be ordinary or "acceptable" senior pranking, despite the significant emotional harm it caused. When Alysha Forrest caught Zennir, she fought him, nearly causing him to lose his hand. As part of her punishment, Forrest was forced to stand on the pedestal (a standard Fleet Academe punishment) and pay his thousand-fin medical bills, which necessitated an entire night of black key work at Phantasies.[63]
