Ametia's dreams were of Kajentarel, the giant winged lionine, fighting alongside her amidst lightning and the screams of animals. Jahir and Vasiht'h interpreted this--due to her feelings of exultation rather than terror in the dream--as her feeling that she was engaging in a righteous battle that she might not win. She ultimately revealed this to be a fight against anti-human prejudice at her university, especially as a history professor who "[fought] for the human perspective on the events prior to the Exodus, and after the Rapprochement." Barrinbilt is a plushly-furred Seersa woman, colored a striking glossy gold tipped in wheat yellow, with brown eyes. She is tall for her species with a lean, athletic frame, wearing long robes. Barrinbilt has a bright soprano voice and exudes enthusiasm and energy in a way that is effortlessly magnetic.

One of the four harem members used to distract Third and Third's Hand in Even the Wingless, along with Moon, Firemint, and Sun's Kindness, due in part to her enjoyment of pain. The Mother selected her, and the Queen appealed to her pride by noting that only the most enticing females could do the duty she asked of them. She was stationed in the Queen's Suite with Moon, and distracted Third.

The refugees were ultimately rescued with the aid of Alysha Forrest and the Scattersky's Platies. A human man with tan skin, a silvered beard, and a strong chin. He had an intense hazel gaze and did not blink often.

He works under Mike Beringwaite in engineering on the Songlance, where he has put off many of his colleagues due to his prejudice and unhappiness working with Pelted. He is a talented engineer, especially with software, but never wanted to go to space and suffers frequent panic attacks; he had to fake his EVA scores to get into the Terran Space Navy. He did so despite his fear because the Navy (and later Fleet) was the only income his family had, and without it his younger sister and grandmother would die in extreme poverty. Beringwaite attempted to protect and defend him to ensure that he did not lose this vital job, and used him as an example to Alysha Forrest of where the prejudices and anger of the Old and Proud were coming from.

However, since he had a brother, the Emperor rejected that claim and offered him the choice between fight and execution. The Heir chose to fight, and was killed by the Emperor.

This was the first death marker the Queen had received in two years ("The deaths had slackened as the seasons passed and the petty kings had bowed their heads to the Emperor's clawed foot"). Unlike Fayid and Solomon, who are competent at their jobs (and more than competent in the case of Fayid), Friedman is, per Beringwaite, "totally an incompetent rhack-up." Beringwaite has chosen to keep him on as long as possible, however, because if he is the one who has him discharged, Fayid and Solomon will turn on him, which will prevent him from being able to protect them.

He works under Mike Beringwaite in engineering on the Songlance, where he has put off many of his colleagues due to his prejudice and unhappiness working with Pelted. Solomon had a bad upbringing with many disadvantages, and ended up in prison as a young man. When he was was released, he joined the Terran Space Navy, where he straightened out, but was later traded to Fleet, where his anger at the Pelted has caused him to make numerous mistakes. Beringwaite attempted to protect and defend him to ensure that he did not get discharged and end up back in prison and used him as an example to Alysha Forrest of where the prejudices and anger of the Old and Proud were coming from.

Zennir had purple eyes, which allowed Alysha Forrest to recognize him as the thief. Zennir was a senior cadet stole a number of precious items of little to no material value but of great emotional value to their owners, such as a photo of Nathan Lifeweave owned by his widow, Laelkii Takara Lifeweave. He went uncaught for a long time, in part because it was taken to be ordinary or "acceptable" senior pranking, despite the significant emotional harm it caused. When Alysha Forrest caught Zennir, she fought him, nearly causing him to lose his hand. As part of her punishment, Forrest was forced to stand on the pedestal (a standard Fleet Academe punishment) and pay his thousand-fin medical bills, which necessitated an entire night of black key work at Phantasies.
